Football is considered a game of emotion and East Coweta’s 17-14 win over Stephenson in their first round AAAAA matchup at Garland Shoemake Stadium supported that contention. “The kids played the best that they could tonight,” commented Indians head coach Danny Cronic. “The spirit and the emotion made for an exciting game. We made some mistakes but it was against an aggressive defense.”

The talk on the Newnan sidelines in the first quarter Friday night centered around the Cougars stopping themselves. Newnan turned the ball over on its first two possessions before settling down and beating Redan, 17-6, in the first round of the state Class AAAAA playoffs. Newnan was on the move on its first possession of the game, driving from its own 27 to a second and eight at the Redan 19 before a tipped pass led to the Raiders interception.

The Panthers did host Americus in the region final in 1982. But in regards to the state playoffs, this is the first. It is also only the second time in school history that the Panthers won a state playoff game.
