Round One is in the books, and it was just what we all expected:  full of surprises and a lot of action.  I wanted to take some time this morning to share with you my thoughts on this past weekend, and my predictions for the next round.

Got beef?  Click here to comment!

Class A

Biggest Surprise: The Fellowship Christian and Wilkinson County lack of offense. Two teams known to be pretty big scorers had a field goal game…one field goal that is. Neither team found their offensive groove. Luckily for Fellowship Christian they got the field goal and were able to advance and will surely have their hands full against Gordon Lee.

Biggest Upset: In my eyes, Pacelli losing to Dooley County is the biggest upset in a weekend full of surprises. The Vikings were our pick and disappointed critics and fans alike falling in their loss.

PredictionsClinch County over Schley County, Gordon Lee over Fellowship Christian, Emmanuel County over Dooley County, Jefferson over Warren County, Bremen over Lincoln County, Wilcox County over Miller County, Athens Academy over Whitefield Academy, Savannah County Day over Brookstone

Class 2A

Biggest Surprise: Calhoun’s ability to score. The Catamounts are fast becoming an offensive force, and it surprised me with the explosion of points against a pretty good Heard County defensive unit. The big question will be if they can continue it against GAC.

Biggest Upset
: Cook over Swainsboro. Swainsboro was one of our favorites to make a run, but they were simply outmatched by Cook who scored 42 points on the vaunted Tigers defense.

PredictionsSavannah Christian over Thomasville, Lovett over Macon County, Dodge County over Cook, Calhoun over GAC, Buford over Darlington, Charlton County over Fitzgerald, Holy Innocents over Peppernell, Dublin over Jefferson County

Class 3A

Biggest Surprise: Thomson and Westover’s legendary playoff battle. In a game that boasted little attention, it might have been the best game of the weekend. Westover defeated Thomson 15-13 in a close fought contest in which both teams can be very proud.

Biggest Upset:  Apalachee over Haralson County. Haralson County was a powerful team primed for big things in the playoffs. Apalachee came in simply took over, and won the game over an ill prepared Haralson County squad.

PredictionsCario over Shaw, Carver Atl over Apalachee, Worth County over Perry, North Hall over Sandy Creek, Carrollton over Westminister, Carver-Columbus over Monroe, Chamblee over Stephens County, Westover over Henry County

Class 4A

Biggest Surprise: Northside Warner Robins’ inability to score points. The Eagles looked very beatable in their 14-0 win against Creekside. Are their chinks in the champions armor? This is a very compelling story that should be followed closely through the playoffs as they take on Evans this week.

Biggest Upset: Banneker over Griffin 41-7. We knew Banneker was good and this would be a tough game for Griffin but no one could have predicted the Bears would go down so quietly. Griffin was a mainstay in the top ten and had a rough go in the playoffs.

Predictions: Northside WR over Evans, Rome over St. Pius X, Bainbridge over Fayette County, Tucker over NW Whitfield, Thomas County Central over Whitewater, E. Paulding over Mays, Ware County over Banneker, Cherokee over Habersham Central

Class 5A

Biggest Surprise: The shutouts. Six teams pitched shutouts this past weekend. Coffee, Brookwood, Valdosta, M.L. King, Lowndes, and Grayson all won their games in impressive fashion. The trend will not continue this week.

Biggest Upset: Peachtree Ridge over North Cobb. The undefeated record didn’t matter in this matchup as Peachtree Ridge took care of business and dispatched a very strong North Cobb squad.

Predictions
: Coffee over Newnan, Brookwood over North Gwinnett, M.L. King over Valdosta, Walton over Harrison, Lowndes over Douglass, Roswell over Peachtree Ridge, Camden County over East Coweta, Norcross over Grayson

That’s it for me right now - remember to post your thoughts here.  If I don’t talk to you before then, have a great Turkey Day.

Hit em’ Hard,
C-Gib

Valdosta is on too big of a roll right now to be denied by your sweetheart team, MLK. Also, watch out for Roswell to get bitten by the upset bug again this week (see: early season loss to Walton).
