Surprise twists to penultimate week
| ajc.com

Chattahoochee has taken out perennial power Camden County and last year’s Class AAAAA co-champion Roswell this season. But in the game that would’ve given the Cougars the 6-AAAAA Division B subregion title, they couldn’t withstand Centennial, a team which needed a win simply to ensure its first winning season in four years.

N. Gwinnett hopes to avoid repeat of last year
| ajc.com

North Gwinnett is 9-0 for the second time in history and hoping to avoid what happened the first time: a defeat against Norcross. When the Region 7-AAAAA rivals played in 2006, both were 9-0, and North Gwinnett was ranked No. 1 for the first time. Norcross won 31-10. This season, Norcross is 8-1 and ranked No. 8, but Friday’s game, at Norcross, will decide the region title again. North Gwinnett, ranked No. 2, has never won a region championship.

Peachtree Ridge went to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in region with the result, while North dropped to 1-8 and 1-6.

Pinecrest Academy made history Friday night — defeating Briarwood Academy 19-6 to secure the school’s first region championship in GISA 1-AA. Paladins’ quarterback Michael Metz threw for 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Metz hit John Drapeau [68 yards receiving] on a 28-yard scoring strike and found Tom Zigtema on a 24-yard pass to the end zone. Zigtema added 66 yards rushing on the night.

Still the champs: Canon’s interceptions can’t prevent War Eagles’ repeat
| forsythnews.com

Dustin Canon came up with three interceptions for Forsyth Central’s defense, but it wasn’t enough to stop South Forsyth from rolling to a repeat as county champions. The War Eagles returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and never looked back, hanging a 30-0 lead on the scoreboard before halftime en route to a 30-13 win over the cross-county rival Bulldogs.

Inconsistency costs Packers again
| moultrieobserver.com

The Colquitt County High football team rediscovered an old weapon on Friday against Warner Robins. Unfortunately, it was too little, both early and late. Eric Key caught seven passes for 115 yards, including three in the opening drive, and a grabbed 37-yarder to set up the Packers only touchdown in their final possession.

Blazers dominate Boll Weevils, winning 63-28
| valdostadailytimes.com

Despite possible worries following Valdosta State’s big win against North Alabama a week ago, the only hangover the Blazers experienced Saturday was from the whiplash of seeing Zac Williams’ extra points clear the uprights. The Blazers traveled to Arkansas-Monticello and routed the Boll Weevils 63-28 Saturday night in their second-to-last game of the regular season.
