Westside star picks Georgia | augustachronicle.com
The Westside defensive back never named a leader. He never touted Auburn more than Georgia or South Carolina. He also wanted to play baseball in the spring. Commings played his cards Tuesday night. The decision came down to the first and last name of Georgia coach Mark Richt.
Player of the Week: Eugene Moore | augustachronicle.com
The President of the Junior Class showed off his leadership skills by running his team to a 25-14 region win against Westside. He had the best rushing game of his prep career with 12 carries for 209 yards and two touchdowns. Moore, a member of the National Youth Leadership Team, broke free for runs of 21, 36, 41 and 80 yards.
Resilient Comets nearing ‘07 goals | waltontribune.com
South Gwinnett has compiled a 4-4 overall record this fall and the Comets have been like Jekyll and Hyde all season. Coach John Small team has been shut out three times, but are averaging 30 points per game in their four victories. Two weeks ago South was blanked 42-0 by Brookwood before rebounding last Friday with a 26-20 triumph over Shiloh.
Devils’ playoffs begin tonight | waltontribune.com
The Georgia High School Association athletics calendar calls for football playoffs to begin Nov. 17. However, for all intents and purposes, the postseason starts tonight for Loganville. The Red Devils host Dacula at 7:30 p.m. in a game that will determine whether or not next week’s contest is meaningful.
Rams face Shiloh in key game | waltontribune.com
A win over Shiloh this evening clinches a playoff spot for Grayson and keeps the Rams’ hopes alive of hosting a first-round playoff game. With a victory over Shiloh, the worst coach Mickey Conn’s team can finish is in a tie for the fourth and final position with Parkview and South Gwinnett. GHS beat both teams during the regular season and thus holds the tie-breaker advantage.

Westminster or Dunwoody: Maxie decides | ajc.com
AJC’s Darryl Maxie usually has a tough time deciding who he will pick for the win, but not like this.
Take 10: Best surprise games | ajc.com
At Take Ten, we love a good surprise. Even as kids, we didn’t go snooping through the closets looking for our Christmas presents because we’d rather tear off the shiny paper and find out Christmas morning. (“Ooooo … an Ewok Village!”) So, naturally, we enjoy it when games turn out how we didn’t expect. This year, like pretty much every year before it, has given us its share of surprises: Chattahoochee over Camden County, Avondale over Greater Atlanta Christian, Sandy Creek over Carrollton. Who’da thunk it?
Key metro matchups: This weekend’s best games | ajc.com
Keep an eye on Harrison’s running game. The Hoyas have rushed for more than 100 yards in all eight games, and McEachern gave up 300 yards rushing to South Cobb last Friday.
State Best Bet: Hart Co.-Stephens Co. | ajc.com
Stephens’ Region 8-AAA foes have not won in the stadium called “The Reservation” in four years. Stephens has won 13 consecutive region games and 23 of their last 24 home games.
State Best Bet: Hart Co.-Stephens Co. | ajc.com
Stephens’ Region 8-AAA foes have not won in the stadium called “The Reservation” in four years. Stephens has won 13 consecutive region games and 23 of their last 24 home games.
Metro Best Bet: Etowah-N. Cobb | ajc.com
Winning tonight doesn’t change much for top-ranked North Cobb. But for Etowah, it would change everything. The Eagles visit North Cobb tonight for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Taking down the No. 1 team in Class AAAAA has its perks, but there are more important issues at stake for the Eagles.
Chiefs in dire need of big win | cheorokeetribune.com
After two consecutive losses, Sequoyah will face a tough challenge when it faces East Paulding, the undefeated Region 5AAAA leader and fourth-ranked team in the state, on Friday in Dallas. The Raiders, who have only allowed three points in their last two games, are allowing only 8.3 points per game while the offense is scoring 23.1 points per game. Sequoyah is allowing 15.5 points per game while scoring 26 points per game.
Up-and-coming teams taking to field in Hillgrove-Creekview showdown | cheorokeetribune.com
On Friday night, Hillgrove will face off against Creekview in a matchup of two teams that have a lot in common. Creekview and Hillgrove have identical 7-1 overall records for the year with both teams losing their fourth game of the season by a close margin. The Hawks and the Grizzlies both enter the game with four-game winning streaks.
Salem squares off with Cedar Shoals for 8-AAAA South title | rockdalecitizen.com
There’s only a small difference this time around: the Seminoles are playing at home.
Salem (7-1 overall, 4-0 in Region 8-AAAA South) puts its seven-game winning streak on the line tonight when Cedar Shoals (8-0 overall, 4-0 in Region 8-AAAA South) visits Evans Memorial Stadium. The Jaguars are ranked No. 7 in the GaSports.com Coaches’ Poll and No. 9 in the Associated Press Poll. Last year, Cedar Shoals beat Salem 21-3 in Athens to claim the subregion title. Turnovers were the big story, as the Seminoles surrendered four fumbles, including one right before halftime that turned a Salem 3-0 lead into a 7-3 halftime deficit.
Tigers, Patriots battle for playoff spot | rockdalecitizen.com
There are several Region 8-AAAA playoff scenarios going into this weekend but one thing is for certain — the Alcovy Tigers control their own destiny as they host Heritage tonight. If Alcovy (2-6 overall, 1-3 in Region 8-AAAA) wins tonight, the team will secure a fourth-seed in the subregion standings. If they finish fourth in the subregion, the Tigers will travel to play Habersham Central in the Region 8-AAAA playoffs next week.
Region scenarios shaping up | timesherald.com
With two Fridays remaining in the local high school football regular season, there are some “sure things” we know about the playoff situation, but still a lot of “ifs.” The major “sure thing” for local fans is that Newnan and East Coweta will make the postseason. The Indians, who are off tonight, have even clinched a home game in the first round regardless of what happens at Newnan on Nov. 9.

Raiders welcome Chargers with 4-AAA playoffs on line | courierherald.com
It really is pretty simple. The winner of Friday’s game between West Laurens and Central-Macon will have a chance to advance to the Class AAA playoffs while the other team will get to host another game at home to end its season. “You kind of control your own destiny,” said Raiders head coach John Pate.

Raymond contributing both ways for SEB Jackets host Metter | statesboroherald.com
Tony Raymond has been busy since he entered Southeast Bulloch as a freshman. A baseball and basketball player already, Raymond decided to try his hand at football in 2007. Under a first-year coaching staff, the junior has excelled in the secondary and at wide receiver for the Yellow Jackets, and he has been a quick learner.
Panthers rally around grief-stricken coach Portal travels to ECI | statesboroherald.com
The Portal Panthers have struggled throughout the 2007 season, losing the first seven games of the year. But last Friday at homecoming they erupted for 399 offensive yards and 52 points and took down Region 3-A foe Calvary Day to get in the win column for the first time since a 47-22 victory over Jenkins County on Nov. 10, 2006. How did they turn it around?
3-AA Showdown: Screven welcomes Swainsboro | statesboroherald.com
A big step towards a region championship. An inch closer to hosting a first-round playoff game. A fourth straight win. All big points of emphasis during the week leading up to tonight’s monster of a game for Screven County against Swainsboro, right? “Oh, gee no,” said Screven coach Pat Collins said. “We can’t control all those scenarios — the if then, then that — we have no control over.
Gators face must-win situation | statesboroherald.com
High-school homecomings conjure up memories of mums with the number of a specific football player in the middle, members of the homecoming court nervously walking across the field at halftime with each secretly wishing that their name would be called and the night-ending homecoming dance.
Backs against the wall, Devils travel to Brunswick | statesboroherald.com
All of a sudden, the Statesboro Blue Devils find themselves with their backs against the wall heading into tonight’s contest with Brunswick. With two region losses, in a four-way tie for second place and a home finale against region front-runner Ware County looming — the Devils are in a must-win scenario.

Betsy Smith didn’t want her final volleyball game to sneak up on her. She didn’t want to stand shocked on a court, watching another team celebrate. She wanted to know the date and time. Now, she does.
