Cass face tough test against Sandy Creek

Every team in Region 6-AAA has a playoff game this week, and the Cass Colonels are no exception. Although it’s only Week 10, the region standings are so tight that seven of the eight teams are still in playoff contention. “This is playoff time,” said Cass head coach Rick Casko. “You have to win to get in. If you don’t, your season is over.”

Newton falls despite 300-plus yards passing

The Newton Rams had their best offensive showing all season Saturday night with more than 300 passing yards, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 46-13 to Region 2-AAAAA foe Stephenson. Freshman quarterback Kenneth Patrick led Newton’s attack by completing 19 of 26 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Patrick started the game by competing his first eight passes and was 12 of 17 for 180 yards at halftime. Patrick hurt his knee in the game, but Newton coach Nick Collins said he didn’t know the extent of the injury. “The guy did a good job,” Collins said.

McIntosh hangs on for 14-11 victory over Northgate

Win No. 2 had been a long time coming for the McIntosh Chiefs, who finally grabbed it Friday, handing the Northgate Vikings their seventh consecutive loss, 14-11 in a Region 2-AAAA game on homecoming night in Peachtree City.

Fayette pounds Banneker 38-12, moves closer to region title

Sandy Creek needed to win its final three games of the season to win the Region 6-AAA title. The race to the region title got significantly tougher Friday for Creek, which lost to the Haralson County Rebels 24-14 in Tallapoosa in a Region 6-AAA game.

Newnan and East Coweta will play for the Region 4-AAAAA championship in Drake Stadium on Nov. 9 regardless of what happens in the Cougars’ game at Hiram this Friday. Both local teams are undefeated in region play while the third and fourth place teams, Mundy’s Mill and Hiram, each have two losses. So even if Newnan loses to Hiram, the Nov. 9 game will still determine the region champion.

Panthers squeak passed Hephzibah

Cobb volleyball teams fall at marathon sectional

Winning that fifth game when volleyball matches go the distance may be a priority at practice next year for certain Cobb County volleyball coaches. Or they may just focus on winning in four games or less so they can go home quicker. There were plenty of marathon matches taking place during Saturday’s Class AAAAA state sectionals at Milton High School that put events way behind schedule.

East Coweta, Northgate eliminated in sectionals

East Coweta and Northgate were eliminated from the state volleyball tournament in the first round of their sectional play over the weekend. The Lady Indians, who finished the year with a 21-18 record, dropped three straight to Harrison in the AAAAA sectionals at Roswell High School while the Lady Vikings, who wrapped up the season at 25-15, were beaten in three straight by Marist in the Quad sectionals at Woodward Academy. The East Coweta girls went into their sectional tournament as the second seed out of Area 4-AAAAA while Northgate was the fourth seeded team out of Area 3-AAAA.

The Trinity Christian Lady Crusader volleyball team’s season came to an abrupt end Friday, with the No. 4 seeded Lady Crusaders fallling in straight sets to No. 1 seed Calvary Christian. “We were a bit nervous, I think, but once we got out there I think we felt like we had been doing this all season long,” said Trinity head coach Lynn Whittle. “And let’s just get in position and do some hard work.

The Lakeview Lady Lions were defeated Saturday by Savannah Christian, moving them out of the Class A/AA State Volleyball Tournament. Lakeview ends the 2007 season at 20-13 overall and 8-3 in region play.

A step in the right direction

The 2007 softball season saw Heritage take a significant step in the right direction.
In fact, the Lady Patriots have shown consistent improvement the past two years under coach Dickey Hightower. After finishing 10-20 in 2005, Hightower and company have turned in two winning seasons. The Lady Patriots finished 13-11 in 2006 and added to that win total with a 17-13-1 record this season.

With a big 27-24 win over North Alabama on Saturday, the Blazers have been rewarded with a second-place ranking in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings. Valdosta State (7-1, 5-1) made the jump from third to second, while UNA (7-1, 5-1) fell to that third-place spot. Delta State (7-1, 6-0) took over first place after beating West Georgia, 41-7.
