Aiken finds groove, pounds North Augusta | augustachronicle.com
It’s almost November, and that can mean only one thing for Aiken’s football team: the playoffs are near. The Hornets took a big step toward another playoff berth, defeating North Augusta 34-9 on Friday night at Hagood Stadium in a battle of Region 4-AAAA rivals.
Last drive gives Thoroughbreds win | augustachronicle.com
For awhile it looked like the winner of the South Aiken-White Knoll game might be the team that had the ball last. South Aiken made sure it was, defeating the Timberwolves 36-33 in Region 4-AAAA play. The win may have put South Aiken into the mix for the playoffs, but the loss pretty much ended White Knoll’s first shot at the postseason in the school’s short history.
Pick 5: Thomson throttles Harlem | augustachronicle.com
Thomson scored twice within about 60 seconds late in the third quarter to blow open a tight game with Harlem in The Brickyard. The black and gold Bulldogs held a tenuous seven-point lead until a pair of quick interceptions powered them to a 35-7 win.

The Wildcats scored 19 unanswered points in the second half to pull away for a 25-14 win at Westside. “We know it’s not over till the fourth quarter ends,” Laney senior defensive lineman/right tackle Theodore McNeal said. “That’s why we keep fighting till the end.”
Skyhawks tame Lions | augustachronicle.com
That is, unless a region title was up for grabs. The Lions (8-2) have hoisted a state championship trophy and boast a 35-9 record against SCISA teams, but a Region 1-AAA title has eluded them.
WOLFPACK COMEBACK FALLS SHORT | augustachronicle.com
Just when Greenbrier got back into Friday night’s Region 3-AAAA game, Glynn Academy’s Brandon McGriff broke the Wolfpack’s back in a 35-13 victory. The Glynn Academy star returned a kickoff 96 yards to lead the Red Terrors to the victory. Glynn Academy opened up a 21-0 lead in the Second Quarter, but Greenbrier cut the score to 21-13 early in the Fourth Quarte

Kell garners improbable shutout | ajc.com
Kell may have been the least likely team to shut anybody out this season — surrendering an average of nearly 38 points a game on the way to an 0-7 start. But the Longhorns put the brakes on Pope for a 14-0 victory, their first shutout since blanking South Cobb 7-0 on Nov. 4, 2005.
State Roundup: Dublin hammers Toombs Co | ajc.com
The second half was the charm for the Dublin Irish on Friday night. Dublin’s defense created four turnovers and hammered Toombs County in the second half to record a 20-3 victory. The Irish, ranked No. 9 in Class AA, intercepted three passes, recovered a fumble and overcame a 3-3 halftime tie. The Irish (7-2) are undefeated in Region 4-AA and will play for the region title next week at Dodge County. Toombs is 5-3, 2-2.
Fayette busts Banneker, moves to 8-0 | ajc.com
Fayette County and football virtually has been a misnomer for years. But those years are long forgotten after the Tigers moved to an 8-0 record for the first time since 1980 by thrashing Banneker 38-12 Friday night. The Region 2-AAAA victory moves Fayette to one victory from capturing its first region championship in some 50 years and clinched its first state playoff appearance since 1997.
LaGrange falls into rare two-game skid | ajc.com
Deron Furr’s 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter sealed Carver-Columbus’ 19-10 victory over LaGrange on Saturday. And it likely put the finishing touches on the Region 2-AAA title as well. The Grangers (6-2, 6-2), who were ranked No. 1 for weeks this season, lost their second consecutive regular-season game — something they hadn’t done since 1999, when they went 2-8.
Do Georgia’s schools need 6 classes? | ajc.com
It’s like playing whack-a-mole. Come up with a plan to smash down the enrollment disparity in the state’s largest class, and travel concerns pop up. Hammer out the details of the travel concerns, and you end up with some regions that have 18 schools (as in Region 5-A) and others (1-AAAAA) that have only four.
The Citizen Sports Blitz | ajc.com
Mike and Kevin take a break while their sports team counterparts Rock Manlington and Ace Sporto take over The Citizen Sports Blitz. Looking like they are straight off the set of “Anchorman,” Manlington and Sporto talk about the wins from Fayette County, Landmark, McIntosh and Starr’s Mill and the losses from Sandy Creek and Our Lady of Mercy.

So what’s next for West Georgia Football | timesgeorgian.com
Ed Murphy certainly understands what Mike Ledford is going through these days. It’s not an ideal situation for either individual, with Murphy, the Director of Athletics at the University of West Georgia, having to see someone he considers a friend leave on the terms the sixth-year UWG football coach has in front of him.

Blazers win the battle | valdostadailytimes.com
Valdosta State defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen summed up perfectly why the No. 11 Blazers defeated the No. 2 North Alabama Lions, 27-24, Saturday. “When you get down to the fourth quarter, and it’s close, and you have two evenly-matched teams, then its just a matter of who has the most will, and who’s going to make the plays.”
VSU players come up big against Lions | valdostadailytimes.com
Last year, the Valdosta State Blazers traveled to Florence, Ala. and watched their playoff hopes slip away with a 31-24 overtime loss to the Lions. This year was a different story. After two straight loses to North Alabama, the Blazers prevailed with a huge conference-shifting win.

Lassiter bests Peachtree Ridge to bring state title back to east Cobb | mariettadailyjournal.com
There was high drama Saturday as Lassiter held on to win its first Class AAAAA fast-pitch softball state title, having to fend off Peachtree Ridge in two games to do it. Down 7-0 to the Lady Lions in the first game, the Lady Trojans rallied to tie the game, but fell 11-7 thanks to a four-run seventh inning. Jessica Cannon recovered to pitch a one-hit game in Game 2 and Caitlin Peisel tagged up on a Brandi Donaldson sacrifice fly to win the title, 2-1, in eight innings.
Lady Vikings win state championship title| timesherald.com
From 2003-05, the Lady Vikings made consecutive appearances in the Elite Eight at the South Commons Sports Complex only to be eliminated and see the season come to an end. This year became more than an appearance or coming close without a title as the Lady Vikings are the queens of the AAAA softball universe after a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon over the Cherokee Lady Warriors.
