Football season is near end
| waltontribune.com

It’s that time of the football season when every snap of the ball carries significance. Loganville hosts No. 6-ranked Habersham Central in a subregion contest. The Red Devils played well enough to win last week against a Jackson County team that was better than advertised. To their credit, it would be understandable if the LHS players were looking ahead to this week’s matchup and the Dacula game next week.

LCA falls short of return to championship
| waltontribune.com

That’s how Loganville Christian Academy’s head football coach, Duane Davis, characterized his team’s 40-22 loss to Evangel Christian in ICSGA regional playoff action Friday night. Despite the loss, Davis said his Lions team had another great year as LCA finished its second season of eight-man football with a 7-2 overall record and 5-2 in the region.

Athlete of the Week
| waltontribune.com

Did Loganville High School football coach Eric Godfree ever hesitate to call on a female placekicker Friday in a crucial subregion game at Jackson County when the Red Devils got inside the 20 yard line? “Absolutely not,” said Godfree. “Ashlynn is almost automatic from 30 yards on in.”

Ex-Blue Devil gets ‘new life’ after collapse
| ajc.com

All things considered, though, he’s pretty happy. “I’m just glad that I’m still here,” he said. A 2006 all-county linebacker at Norcross, Nevels collapsed on a practice field two weeks before his season opener at Tennessee-Chattanooga. The redshirt freshman had just finished a drill called Oklahoma, where players “try to hit everybody as hard as we can.” Then he joined his fellow linebackers in a coverage drill.

Football fights cause GHSA concern
| ajc.com

For two weeks in a row, fights have ended high school football games early. First, it was Luella-Union Grove, resulting in 10 suspended players and triple-digit fines for both teams. Then, it was Glenn Hills-Thomson, where a smaller, but still alarming, altercation led to one suspended player.

4 questions, including who will win Grayson-Brookwood
| ajc.com

For the record, I have been on the Grayson bandwagon from the start of the season. I also have been one of Brookwood’s biggest doubters. I even picked the Broncos to win less than six games.

Tigers look to rebound Friday
| ajc.com

Less than a week after a 41-0 blowout loss to No. 4 Calhoun, the Adairsville Tigers have seemingly moved on from the humbling they received at the hands of the Yellow Jackets. “The kids have responded fine since we got beat,” said Adairsville head coach Mark Arthur prior to Tuesday’s practice. “One thing about (last week) that I was pleased with was that the kids didn’t get their heads down and quit. They kept playing hard and we just got beat by a better team and that happens in sports.

Bulldogs to meet unbeaten Jaguars
| rockdalecitizen.com

It’s Week 8 of the high school football season and every game is becoming more crucial in the quest for a state playoff berth. Rockdale (1-6) sits at 1-2 in Region 8-AAAA South play, and the Bulldogs must travel to Athens on Friday to play undefeated Cedar Shoals (7-0 overall, 3-0 in 8-AAAA South). Only the top four teams in the subregion will have to earn state playoff bids in the region playoffs, and the Bulldogs are in a three-way tie for third place in 8-AAAA South play with Eastside and Alcovy.

Bo knows: Jackson turning Friday nights into highlight
| courierherald.com

Even though the cold weather hadn’t quite settled over Trinity’s Cleve Warnock Stadium (affectionately called the “Cleve” by coach Steve Price), the cold from the wobbling concrete bleachers at the top of the stands still bled through a pair of blue jeans in about a minute or two. But I was on a mission (Yes, the Blues Brothers reference is a little too obvious).

A tall task awaits
| griffindailynews.com

First-year Griffin Christian head coach Kerry Phillips realizes the task facing his team Friday when state runner-up Flint River comes into town is monumental. After all Griffin Christian (0-8 overall, 0-5 GISA Class A North) hasn’t won a game this year while Flint River (8-0, 5-0) hasn’t lost. “When you’re 0-8 and you’ve got somebody that’s coming that’s the state runner-up and in your region, you just want to go out there and be competitive,” said Phillips.

GRIFFIN NOTEBOOK: Get ready for the Aaron’s Lucky Dog Bowl
| griffindailynews.com

Friday is senior night at Griffin High. This year, compliments of the Aaron’s store in Griffin, that means something a little more than usual. When Jonesboro comes calling, the No. 10-state ranked Griffin High Bears will be hosting something that is being dubbed the inaugural “Aaron’s Lucky Dog Bowl. It’s a first-of-it’s-kind event. David Piper, the manager of the local Aaron’s, came up with the idea.

Farmer’s and Merchant’s Bank Athlete of the Week: Joseph Sparks

Joseph Sparks had never beaten Nathanael Greene Academy in his high school career. Last Friday he did everything in his power to make sure a fourth loss to the Patriots was out of the question.

Monroe back on top after loss by Early County
|albanyherald.com

Monroe played one of its most lackluster games of the season against Crisp County, but as the popular saying goes, a win is a win. Thanks to their 14-13 victory against the Cougars, the Tornadoes move back into the No. 1 spot in the Herald’s poll with just three weeks remaining before the playoffs.

Mitchell provides big spark for No. 1 Spartans
| gwinnettdailypost.com

Top-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian’s fastpitch softball team may be best known for the power arm of Jessica Coan - with 23 shutouts and 392 strikeouts to her credit. However, the Spartans may also have the premier power bat of the Class AA state tournament in the form of the other part of their pitcher-catcher battery when they begin play in Columbus on Thursday against Screven County.

Poll not goal for teams
| mariettadailyjournal.com

North Cobb, Harrison and Walton remain in the top 10 in The Associated Press Georgia High School poll, but it’s the final weeks of the regular season that really matter to the coaches. The Warriors, who are still undefeated with an 8-0 overall record, are still ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAA. Harrison stayed at No. 6, and Walton moved up from eighth and is now tied with Stephenson at No. 7.

Needing just one more win to advance to the Elite Eight in Columbus, both the Bowdon and Central High School softball teams fell short at their respective sectionals tournament Saturday.

The landscape has changed considerably, but on any given afternoon you can still get stuck behind a tractor driving down Georgia Highway 67 headed to Georgia Southern University. Strip malls, gas stations, fast food joints and a major hospital are all new, but pastoral areas remain in abundance.
