The Georgia High School Association fined Union Grove $250 and Luella $150 and suspended the 10 players involved in an Oct. 12 altercation for one game. Both schools were placed on “severe warning status” for one calendar year, following a fight on the Luella sideline during the two teams’ game, GHSA executive director Ralph Swearngin said Monday.

The Rams (1-6 overall, 1-3 in Region 2-AAAAA) came into the game fresh off their big win over Lithonia last week. And from the way the game started, head coach Nick Collins had reason to believe his team could hang with the undefeated Lions, who are ranked No. 3 in this week’s AP prep football poll.

Grayson’s fastpitch softball team put up plenty of offense during last weekend’s Class AAAAA North sectional tournament at Central Park in Cumming, scoring 19 runs in sweeping games against Kell, Collins Hill and Lassiter. However, pitching and defense were perhaps the biggest keys to the No. 3 state-ranked Rams (27-6-1) advancing to the state tournament in Columbus for the first time since moving up to Class AAAAA in 2004.

Nine seniors will get another chance at the GHSA State AAAA Softball Championship as the Northgate Lady Vikings defeated the Evans Lady Knights 3-1 Saturday afternoon in the South Sectional Tournament at Lovejoy Regional Park. The win for Northgate – the 2006 state AAAA runnerup – allows the Lady Vikings to advance to their fifth straight Elite Eight Tournament beginning Thursday at Columbus. “It is a goal of ours each year to make it to the Elite Eight,” Northgate head coach Lisa Skelton. “(Saturday) we were a little flat but we got big hits from Kate Kuzma and good pitching from Kelsey Floyd.”

The state best high school softball teams are headed to Columbus once again. The Georgia High School Association state tournaments begins Thursday at the South Commons complex. Three local Class AAA teams survived the sectionals over the weekend to earn berths in the state quarterfinals. All three play their first game at noon Thursday.

What makes the Trinity softball team tick? For the past two years the Lady Crusaders have dominated on the softball field. And it hasn’t been just AA; the Lady Crusaders won the AAA Freedom Park preseason tournament this past August. The Lady Crusaders captured their second State Championship in as many years this past Saturday. It’s also the first two state softball titles in school history.

The Savannah Christian senior led the No. 10-ranked Red Raiders to a 44-26 win over Long County by completing 8-of-9 passes for 222 yards with five touchdown passes. DeMasi’s impressive night earned him Player of the Week honors, but he was quick to deflect credit.

The Lady Patriots won their first match of the day against Winder-Barrow 23-25, 25-21, 25-17. However, Heritage dropped the next two matches to Clarke Central 23-25, 18-25 and Habersham Central 12-25, 25-23, 18-25.
