Georgia Southern turned the annual Black Saturday party into a funeral gathering for most of the 28,202 fans at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Southern threw some new wrinkles at the two-time defending Football Championship Subdivision titlists and came away with something new - its first win in Boone since 2001.

Lowe gives GSU offense a boost

Billy Lowe’s chances have been few and far between this football season. Before Saturday, the Northern Illinois transfer saw limited action at quarterback in three of Georgia Southern’s six games. He completed one of two passes for 2 yards and ran four times for 7 yards.

For the second game in a row, the Valdosta State football team led 24-0 before the fourth quarter. But this time, the Blazers were able to hold on for the win. Nine days after falling to Delta State 35-31, VSU defeated West Alabama 37-0 in Livingston, Ala.

Pippin shed tears during a few touching embraces with his family Friday after a 23-22 comeback win at South Aiken. It was easy to see how much five victories in nine games mean to the entire North Augusta football family.

Haynes masters Prince Avenue’s maze

In the first half of the Tigers’ victory over Prince Avenue on Friday, the senior used his shiftiness and speed to maneuver his way around defenders and into the end zone three times. Three plays after Thomas Sears picked off Prince Avenue quarterback Jon Richt’s first interception of the season, Haynes ran in a 3-yard touchdown.

Canes fall to Cedartown in OT

However, for the Cedartown Bulldogs, when the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes blocked their game-winning field goal attempt in the second overtime, the Bulldogs found a good bounce and took the ball into the end zone to defeat the Canes, 41-35, Friday night at Cartersville.

Calhoun whips Adairsville

What was expected to be a tough game between Calhoun and Adairsville Friday night in Adairsville turned into just another region win for the fifth-ranked Jackets. Calhoun raced to five touchdowns in the first half en route to a 41-0 Region 7-AA North win for the Jackets. It was the 53rd straight region victory since 2001 for Calhoun, which upped its record to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in 7-AA North, while the Tigers dropped to 5-2 overall, 1-1 in 7-AA North.

Both Eastside and Rockdale saw their softball seasons end Saturday in the second day of the Class AAAA North state sectionals at Twin Creeks Park. Rockdale lost 4-2 to Alexander in an early game, while Eastside managed to beat Alexander 3-1 but then lost 7-6 to Loganville. “Overall in the tournament, we did a good job, even though we didn’t get the result that we wanted,” Eastside coach Heather Wood said.

The 2007 season came to an end Saturday for the Newnan Lady Cougars as they were defeated 1-0 by the Tift County Lady Devils in a loser bracket game of the AAAAA South Sectional at Lovejoy Regional Park. The Lady Cougars, who were 1-2 in three 1-0 games, finished the season at 13-15 while the Lady devils will advance to the Elite Eight Tournament scheduled for next week in Columbus. “We weren’t able to execute offensively this weekend,” commented Newnan head coach Carrie Gilmore. “I was disappointed that there were scoring chances and we didn’t take advantage.

The Raiders finally came across a happy ending, as they held on for a 17-14 victory over Duluth on Friday night. “I’m so happy to finally see a smile on their face and they finally get to validate all of their hard work,” North head coach Jared Zito said after the game.

North Gwinnett’s defense scored a touchdown right out of the gate against South Forsyth Friday night, then spent the rest of the game keeping the War Eagles off balance, helping the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs to a 29-6 home win. Linebacker Donald Maxwell scooped up a fumble on the game’s opening play and ran it 22 yards for a score, giving North Gwinnett [8-0 overall, 6-0 Region 7-AAAAA] a 7-0 lead just 14 seconds into the contest.

Griffin High’s season comes to end at state

The Lady Bears bounced back with a 4-3 win Saturday morning against Thomas County Central to advance in the loser’s bracket. Tedra Alford tossed the first five innings, striking out four. Kristen Gregory tossed the last three, striking out six to pick up the win.

Spalding’s season comes to end at state

The Parkview volleyball team weathered an early loss, played in three consecutive matches on Saturday and still defeated Central Gwinnett in consecutive games to claim the Region 8-AAAAA title. It opened up the match with the Black Knights matching them point for point. But in the end, the Panthers proved to be the better team and pulled away at the end of the first game to win it 25-19.

Dacula’s motto going into the area volleyball tournament: Protect this house. Hosting the Area 8-AAAA tournament, Dacula ran through the competition en route to a second straight title on Saturday. The Falcons secured a No. 1 seed in the state playoffs by hammering Cedar Shoals, Loganville and Clarke Central twice. “I was really happy that we played so well at home,” Dacula head coach Kristy Dermid said. “Our motto was, ‘Protect this house,’ and the kids really got fired up every time we said it.”
