Knights lay claim to realm
| augustachronicle.com

Evans knocked off Statesboro 10-7 on Friday night in an upset that fans at John Pierce Blanchard Stadium haven’t seen in years. Evans, the same team that tallied a combined five wins over the previous two seasons, now holds a 6-0 record and first place in the region standings after beating the No. 4 team in Class AAAA.

Aquinas has little luck in stopping run
| augustachronicle.com

For the past three years, Aquinas coach Bill Tenore said his Irish had been trying to find a way to stop the running ability of Warren County quarterback Tommy Seals. Make it four years, as Warren County won their homecoming game 57-14 over the Irish at Legion Field.

Cross Creek keeps perfect record
| augustachronicle.com

Seniors Jeff Howard and Mike Lee sacked Washington County quarterback Markeist Warthen on the Razorbacks’ 18-yard line with no time remaining to preserve a 7-0 Region 3B-AAA opening victory.

High turnover costly to Aiken
| augustachronicle.com

“Turnovers. That’s it - all year long,” Johnson said. It was an obvious answer after Aiken’s performance on homecoming at Hagood Stadium. The Hornets turned the ball over four times, three of which led to first-half scores for the Irmo Yellow Jackets, who rolled to a 24-6 victory.

North Augusta nets region win
| augustachronicle.com

White Knoll (5-3, 0-2) never recovered from an abysmal first half. Only three Timberwolves touched the football in the game’s first 24 minutes, and the Yellow Jackets defense held the trio to just 34 total offensive yards. North Augusta coach Dan Pippin said he expected more from White Knoll, but credited his defense with stellar play, which included a 29-yard interception return by L.J. Perry in the second quarter.

Offensive explosion lifts Thomson to win
| augustachronicle.com

Thomson used the late first-half burst to put Butler away 40-6 in the Brickyard on Friday. “Everybody came out and did their jobs, did what they had to. Everybody gave 100 percent,” said Thomson halfback Kwynta D.T. Brown, who rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown on six carries. “I just felt like it was good timing. I come out here and do what I have to do to get us on the board.”

Salley guides Eagles
| augustachronicle.com

Wagener-Salley quarterback Dontrall Salley lofted a 13-yard pass to Justin Scott, who had gotten behind defender E.J. Bijur, for the go-ahead score to make it 14-7 in the second quarter.

Eagles soar by Rebels in OT
| augustachronicle.com

On fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line in overtime, and with Strom Thurmond needing to get into the end zone to keep the game alive, Rebels quarterback Aramis Hillary’s pass into the corner of the end zone to standout receiver Pooh Williams was batted down by Airport defensive back Akheem Sackel.

Brookwood blanks South with ease
| ajc.com

Never was the outcome in doubt. It was just a matter of how convincingly Brookwood (5-2, 4-0) would win. The difference could have been more significant if penalties had not nullified Kenny Miles touchdown runs of 30 and 55 yards in the first quarter. Even still, Miles scored on runs from 6, 24 and 46 by halftime, when Brookwood led 28-0. The final two quarters were mere formalities.

S. Forsyth no problem for North
| ajc.com

Patrick Thompson handled North Gwinnett’s complex spread offense like a veteran Friday night in a 29-6 win over South Forsyth. Thing is, Thompson was making his first varsity start. The senior backup quarterback picked apart the War Eagles’ defense for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Filling in for starter Michael Tamburo, who was out with a concussion suffered in last week’s win over Peachtree Ridge, Thompson completed his first 10 passes and was 21-of-31 on the night.

GAC’s back! Spartans whip Wesleyan
| ajc.com

Soon after handing region rival Wesleyan a 24-0 drubbing Friday, Greater Atlanta Christian coach Jimmy Chupp had a few words for the visiting Wolves. “They gave us some ammunition, and we put it on them,” said Chupp, who was fired up about some comments he heard from Wesleyan early in the week. “They said that we were almost done and they were going to bury us, hammer the nails in our coffin. We didn’t like that too much. They got a shutout, a thumping. They got what they deserved.”

State Roundup: Northside-WR rallies to win
| ajc.com

Northside-Warner Robins, ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA, trailed by two touchdowns early in the game but recovered to defeat Upson-Lee 31-26 in Thomaston. The Eagles lost quarterback Marques Ivory to an injury in the first half. Running back Tijuan Green, who entered the game with 20 touchdowns, also was injured in the third period after scoring two touchdowns. He returned midway through the fourth period for the Eagles’ final drive and scored the clinching touchdown.

N. Metro Roundup: Berkmar falls flat
| ajc.com

Host Parkview pulled out a come-from-behind win over Lilburn-rival Berkmar. Parkview scored all of its points in the second half in a 21-7 victory. “Sometimes when your back is against the wall, you play your best,” Parkview coach Cecil Flowe said. Parkview leveled its Region 8-AAAAA record at 2-2 and is 5-2 overall. Berkmar, which was trying to break a seven-game losing streak to its crosstown rival, has the same records.

S. Metro Roundup: Fayette Co., Whitewater impressive
| ajc.com

In the pecking order of high school football in Georgia, Fayette County isn’t mentioned in the same breath as most of its metro Atlanta brethren. But two schools — Fayette County and Whitewater — are taking strides this season toward changing that. While Fayette County (7-0, 5-0 Region 2-AAAA), ranked No. 9 in Class AAAA, was improving upon its undefeated record Friday night, neighboring Whitewater was being anything but neighborly to county rival Starr’s Mill — to the tune of a 35-7 thumping.

Chamblee powers past Grady
| ajc.com

Having one of the state’s best offensive linemen sidelined with a bad knee would put a normal Class AAA team in a quandary. And having one of the area’s best skill players knocked out in the second quarter that same night would be a death knell for most. But Chamblee is not a normal AAA team. The No. 8-ranked Bulldogs (7-0) proved that Friday night at North DeKalb Stadium by rolling over Grady 49-21 in a critical game that they played without 305-pound lineman Omoregie Uzzi and wingback-cornerback Malcolm Beyah.

Fellowship tops Landmark, stays undefeated
| ajc.com

Fellowship Christian defensive back Will Mitchell found himself buried beneath two things on his last play Friday night: Walter Lenard and history disguised as a football. The Paladins defeated Landmark Christian 24-17 on the road, in an epic game for both teams. Fellowship Christian (7-0, 2-0) remained undefeated and took control of Region 5-A despite entering just its second season of varsity football.

Pius punishes mistake-prone SW DeKalb
| ajc.com

During the halftime festivities, the Southwest DeKalb band played to a standing ovation at Maloof Stadium. As usual, Southwest rocked the house, but it was the St. Pius football team that did most of the rocking during the game. The Golden Lions capitalized on a few Southwest mistakes while using a punishing ground attack in the 25-7 Region 6-AAAA victory Friday.

Northview no match for Chattahoochee
| ajc.com

There was no letdown for Chattahoochee this time. The Cougars defeated Northview 48-18 on Friday, one week after an emotional victory against Roswell, the defending Class AAAAA co-champions.

Marietta ‘will take’ win over Etowah
| ajc.com

Marietta stayed in the race for the Region 5-AAAAA title, but Friday’s game against Etowah was more of a defensive battle than the Devils have been used to. Marietta turned in perhaps its most impressive defensive performance of the year, limiting Etowah’s split-back veer attack to less than 100 yards rushing in a 14-3 victory against the Eagles.

Sandy Creek stuns Carrollton
| ajc.com

Braxton Lane better enjoy the single coverage, because it’s probably the last time he’ll see it all year. The junior caught eight passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns as Rio Johnson’s main target, helping Sandy Creek hand Carrollton its first loss of the season, 28-14.

Dacula deftly defeats Winder-Barrow
| ajc.com

Dacula used a slew of fourth-down conversions, deft clock management and a heavy dose of running back Cisco Barry as the Falcons survived a late rally and defeated Winder-Barrow 22-15 Friday night in Winder. Winder-Barrow took an early lead on their first possession on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Greg Dixon to Chris Wragg.

Shiloh pastes Meadowcreek
| ajc.com

Shiloh wanted badly to get its first Region 8-AAAAA victory, Friday, so it turned to a pair of Johnsons to lead them into the win column. Chaz Johnson rushed for 97 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns and Ira Johnson threw for a touchdown and ran for another in Shiloh’s 35-6 win over Meadowcreek. After three consecutive losses by a combined 19 points, Shiloh (2-5, 1-3) jumped on top on the third play from scrimmage and never trailed, winning for the 15th straight time in the series. Tailback Reuben Lacy took a pitch from quarterback Mark Wright and exploded for a 63-yard touchdown to put the Generals up 7-0.

Parkview pounces on Berkmar
| ajc.com

Parkview took the field Friday night at its Big Orange Jungle in an unlikely situation for the Gwinnett County powerhouse. If it wasn’t a must-win game, it was pretty close. The Panthers responded with a come-from-behind win over Lilburn rival Berkmar.

Collins Hill bests Forsyth Central
| ajc.com

Collins Hill defeated Region 7-AAAAA foe Forsyth Central 16-7 in a game that was close going into the final quarter and possibly provided some positive momentum for the Eagles heading into the final three games of the season. After losing their first five games this fall, the Eagles (2-5, 2-3 region) have won their past two and perhaps righted the ship.

N. Forsyth nips Duluth
| ajc.com

Down by 11 points in the second half, Duluth rallied to make things interesting. But once again, the Wildcats came up short and fell to previously winless North Forsyth, 17-14. The Raiders (1-6) now have two wins in the past two years, both coming against Duluth, which drops to 1-6, 0-5 in Region 7-AAAAA.

Grayson shuts down Central
| ajc.com

When Grayson needed a big-time play, the Rams turned to one their smallest players. Sophomore running back Ean Pemberton converted the biggest play of the night, running for 21 yards on fourth-and-9 from the Central Gwinnett 29, then churned into the end zone two plays later to seal a dramatic 17-7 homecoming victory over the Black Knights at Britt-Moody Stadium Friday night.

Big plays boost Norcross past Mill Creek
| ajc.com

USC-bound Brice Butler sprinted by defenders for seven catches, 115 yards and two touchdowns, plus he made an interception. Alex Napper returned a kickoff 86 yards and caught a 36-yard touchdown off a fake punt. Alabama-bound Devonta Bolton intercepted a pass at the goal line.

Buford blasts Walker in shutout
| ajc.com

It only took three plays to for Buford to demonstrate its game against Walker was a mismatch of epic proportions. Whoever came up with the idea for the mercy rule must have had Walker in mind. Thre plays was how long it took the Wolves, ranked No. 1 in Class AA, to score the first of their five first-half touchdowns Friday night en route to their 56-0 thumping of the Wolverines.

Gladiators power past Pensacola
| gwinnettdailypost.com

Their penchant for committing penalties and yielding second-chance opportunities proved decisive in a 5-3 loss against the Gwinnett Gladiators. Captain Mike Vigilante and Mike Hamilton each scored twice for the Gladiators. Jeff Campbell collected four assists. Much of the opening-crowd of 4,428 at The Hangar had departed when the Ice Pilots scored two goals in the final 90 seconds. But it did leave a better impression as the Ice Pilots head to Duluth for tonight’s rematch with the Gladiators. Puck drop for the Gladiators home opener at the Arena at Gwinnett Center is today at 7:35 p.m.

North Forsyth 17, Duluth 14
| gwinnettdailypost.com

North Forsyth dominated the first half of play on Friday night, and held off a Duluth comeback in the fourth quarter to win its first football game of the season, a 17-14 victory over the Wildcats.
Both teams now have identical 1-6 records, although Duluth falls to last place in Region 7-AAAAA with an 0-5 record. North Forsyth scored first with 1:29 left in the first quarter when quarterback Eli Chester found receiver Michael Norton open for a nine-yard touchdown pass. Leon Castleberry kicked the extra point, and the Raiders took a 7-0 lead. Castleberry also added a 24-yard field goal in the high-scoring second quarter.

Shiloh 35, Meadowcreek 6
| gwinnettdailypost.com

Shiloh probably didn’t need Ira Johnson to win Friday’s Region 8-AAAAA game against winless Meadowcreek. But it was good to have him back. Entering the game with just over four minutes to play in the first half, the senior quarterback threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Robert Hodge, then opened the second half with a 46-yard TD run to seal the game as Shiloh beat Meadowcreek 35-6. Johnson was suspended for last week’s game against Berkmar, and sophomore quarterback Mark Wright ran the Generals’ triple option offense well enough to earn the starting nod against Meadowcreek. Shiloh (2-5, 1-3 region) scored two TDs with Wright at quarterback, but a slight concussion following his second fumble in the first half brought Johnson into the game.

Collins Hill 16, Forsyth Central 7
| gwinnettdailypost.com

After a dismal 0-5 start in the first half of the season, Collins Hill remained perfect after the turn with a gutsy 16-7 win over Forsyth Central on Friday night. The win, sparked by Collins Hill’s defense, improved the Eagles to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. “We played so well on defense,” Collins Hill head coach Larry Sherrill said. “I just can’t say enough for them. They played their hearts out and played with guts and courage. I called them the Magnificent 11 after the game.”

Grayson 17, Central Gwinnett 7
| gwinnettdailypost.com

On its biggest drive of the game, Grayson called on its smallest running back, and Ean Pemberton came up huge. The diminutive running back rolled up more than half of his 130 yards on the evening and capped a 10-play, 69-yard, fourth-quarter drive with a 2-yard touchdown run that clinched the Rams’ 17-7 victory over Central Gwinnett on Friday night at Britt-Moody Field at Grayson Community Stadium.

Norcross 24, Mill Creek 10
| gwinnettdailypost.com

Mill Creek’s defense got the expected Norcross passes, the ones to Southern California commitment Brice Butler. The one the Hawks didn’t expect hurt just as much. Fourth-ranked Norcross executed a perfect fake-punt pass late in the third quarter, adding to a pair of touchdown passes to Butler, to pull away from host Mill Creek 24-10 on Friday in Region 7-AAAAA football.

Seminoles dominate
| rockdalecitizen.com

Nothing flashy, nothing fancy, but it was enough for Salem to run away with a 45-6 win against county rival Rockdale on Friday night at Reid Memorial Stadium.
The Seminoles (6-1 overall, 3-0 8-AAAA South) combined a powerful rushing attack with an opportunistic defense and jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead.

Perfect Jags top Alcovy
| rockdalecitizen.com

Cedar Shoals rolled its undefeated record into Sharp Stadium on Friday night for a subregion matchup with Alcovy, and the Jaguars defeated the Tigers 21-11 on homecoming night. “The kids put it on the line,” said Alcovy coach Kirk Hoffmann. “We played with them. We came in, and I said we had to be perfect. We had a couple of dropped passes and that hurt us. We were as close to perfect as possible, and a couple of breaks and it ends up a little different.”

Wray’s big plays too much for Heritage
| rockdalecitizen.com

Wray rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another after halftime as the Eagles (5-2 overall, 1-2 in 8-AAAA South) exploded for 29 points in the second half to claim a 36-29 victory over Heritage (2-5 overall, 0-3 in 8-AAAA South). “Great players make great plays in great situations,” Eastside coach Rick Hurst said. “He’s the kind of a kid who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line, and I want the ball in his hands when the game is on the line.” Wray found the ball in his hands often in the second half.

Whitewater crushes Starr’s Mill 35-7
| thecitizen.com

Last season, the Whitewater Wildcats had to come from behind to defeat their biggest rival, the Starr’s Mill Panthers. The two teams met in a rematch Friday, but Whitewater made sure it wouldn’t need to stage a comeback the second time around, scoring 28 points in the first quarter en route to a convincing 35-7 victory over visiting Starr’s Mill in a key Region 2-AAAA clash.

Villa Rica and HC positioning for that elusive playoff berth
| timesgeorgian.com

Haralson County and Villa Rica have followed similar paths this season. Both teams got off to good starts, winning all three of their non-region games, and both have struggled since opening their Region 6-AAA schedules. Both teams will bring 1-2 region records when they meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Sam McIntyre Field in Villa Rica. The winner will find itself right in the thick of the playoff race in Region 6-AAA. The loser will likely drop to seventh place and almost certainly need to win its three remaining games just for the chance to compete for a playoff spot.

Wheeler, Treutlen renew ‘River Rumble’
| courierherald.com

When Wheeler County and Treutlen get together there are no words needed from the coaches to get the teams ready to play in this rivalry. “It’s one of those games that when you get your calender, every coach circles,” said Treutlen head coach Britt Ingle. “It’s a good old fashion rivalry. If anybody is looking for a good game to go to, they need to go to Soperton because it’s going to be a doggone good one.”
