Take 10: Our dream games
| ajc.com

Such great matchups last weekend. Tucker-Mays. M.L. King-Stephenson. Parkview-Grayson. North Gwinnett-Peachtree Ridge. Just to name a few. At Take 10, we’re a sucker for a big game. Give us two great teams, an electric atmosphere, some overpriced nachos and we’re set.

Mays coach suspended with pay
| ajc.com

Mays High football coach Jesse Solomon has been suspended with pay, pending a hearing within 10 days. Atlanta Public Schools notified Solomon that it was taking action against him for failing to disclose that he was under investigation in Florida for disciplinary action he took against a student in Palm Beach in 2003. Solomon said Wednesday — and produced documents to back up his assertions — that the Palm Beach board of education cleared him of any wrongdoing.

New strategies at Milton, Hooch
| ajc.com

After being burned by Roswell quarterback Dustin Taliaferro last year with several long passes, Chattahoochee’s defense came up with a new scheme for Friday’s 13-10 win: The safety played 30 yards away from the line of scrimmage on each down. Coach Terry Crowder said: “We’ve struggled versus the deep ball. I know with [our safety] playing back there at 30 yards, someone had to have a lot of courage to go after us. It worked for us.

Union Grove-Luella fight under investigation
| ajc.com

Officials at Union Grove and Luella are awaiting possible penalties from the Georgia High School Association after the Region 2-AAAAA game was halted following an altercation on the Luella sideline that resulted in 10 players being ejected Friday night. “We are waiting on videotape from the home team,” said GHSA spokesman Steve Figueroa, “and we’ll do something depending on what the tape shows.”

Canes return home Friday
| dailytribune.com

Last week’s games didn’t do much to clear up the Region 6-AAA standings, as three teams are tied for second at 2-1 and three more are tied for fifth with 1-2 marks in the region. The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes (3-2-1, 2-1) are one of the teams tied for second and they face another tough region test Friday night when they play host to the Cedartown Bulldogs (3-3, 2-1) at Weinman Stadium. Kickoff for the homecoming game is set for 7:30 p.m.

Tigers face tough challenge against Jaguars
| rockdalecitizen.com

The Alcovy Tigers know what they have to do to beat a team like Cedar Shoals when the two face off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Homer Sharp Stadium for Alcovy’s homecoming.
But actually doing what needs to be done is a totally different situation. Making the task difficult is Jaguars senior quarterback Trent McGuire. In six games, McGuire is averaging 6.5 yards per carry with 574 yards on 89 carries. When he’s not rambling down the field, he’s completing 55 percent of his passes, going 28 of 51 for 310 yards.

Region play begins for 2-4 Hawks
| timesherald.com

With the completions of exams in the classroom at the Heritage School, the course known as Football 102 will resume this week for the Hawks. The Hawks’ exam administered by professor/head coach Ron Beaucham for this course will be Friday night when they host the Holy Spirit Prep Cougars. The contest marks the opening of the GISA Region 4-AA schedule for the Hawks. “We weren’t able to workout last week with exams and college visits,” Beaucham said. “The kids went back to work on Monday with some running and we had a decent practice on Tuesday getting ready for Holy Spirit.”

Schedule gets much tougher
| timesherald.com

To say the first three games of the 2007 GHSA Region 4-AAAAA football schedule have been lopsided for the East Coweta Indians might be considered an understatement. In games against Paulding County, Morrow and Tri-Cities, the Indians outscored the trio by a total of 140-13. East Coweta scored a season-high 58 points in its 58-7 rout of the Morrow Mustangs on Oct. 6. The competition gets significantly tougher Friday as the Indians (6-1 overall, 3-0 in region) travel to Twelve Oaks Stadium to face the Mundy’s Mill Tigers.

A drive through the winding backwoods of Calhoun County leaves civilization in the rearview mirror: Dirt paths, log cabins and rising pines flank the lonely two-lane road that eventually leads to Calhoun County High School.

True Winnersville Classics

They call it the Winnersville Classic, and the Valdosta-Lowndes football rivalry has seen its share of classic games. Few rivalries can match the Winnersville Classic for intensity and excitement. Every time Valdosta and Lowndes step on the same field together, there’s always the potential for a down-to-the-wire dogfight.

Emily Galloway posted five kills and Morgan Downey collected 19 assists.

Tolbert’s value key for Lady Dragons
| onlineathens.com

One look says it all for Kimberlee Tolbert. Jefferson coach Brad Puckett sees it every time the senior prepares to pitch. He was glad to see it when Tolbert dug into the batter’s box in a clutch situation on Oct. 4. With the 8-A region title on the line in a 3-all game against Commerce, Tolbert came to the plate with a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh.

Jimi Hendrix played guitar. Pablo Picasso painted pictures. Oconee County High School plays softball. For the past three years, the Lady Warriors have done it better than anyone in the state of Georgia in Class AAA, entering this Friday’s sectionals in Gainesville as region champions and the three-time defending state champs.

Lady Eagles soar into sectional tourney
| dailytribune.com

Excel Christian has had a varsity softball team for just two seasons, but the Lady Eagles have come a long way in a short time. After posting a winning record in their first year playing a full region schedule last year, Excel (13-11-1) qualified for this year’s Class A Sectional Tournament at Alto Park in Rome by finishing fourth at the Region 6-A Tournament last week.

| gwinnettdailypost.com

After winning back-to-back state championships as a Class AAA school in 2002 and 2003, Grayson’s softball program hasn’t quite been able to get back to the state finals tournament in Columbus. Of course, the Rams probably haven’t had as deep a team as they’ve got this year, and they certainly haven’t had an impact player like Mandi Burns has been this season.

Columbus on the map for Bulldogs
| rockdalecitizen.com

The Rockdale softball team ended an 11-year drought by qualifying for Class AAAA North State Sectional with a third-place finish in last week’s Region 8-AAAA Tournament.
Now, the Lady Bulldogs have the opportunity to put to rest another softball drought that’s reached 11 years. The 1996 team (in Class AAA) was the last Rockdale squad to reach the sectional and qualify for the state tournament, and this year’s edition of the Lady Bulldogs has a chance to match that feat when the North Sectional begins Friday afternoon at Twin Creeks Park in Woodstock.

West seeks first state tournament berth; Wolverines one win away following split
| forsythnews.com

West Forsyth is one win away from a state tournament berth or one loss away from season’s end, after splitting a pair of matches on Tuesday in the Area 7-AAA tournament. The Lady Wolverines, seeded third after compiling a 7-2 area mark in the regular season, started tournament play with a three-game victory over sixth-seeded Pickens at Chestatee. The Dragonettes took the first game of the match by a 25-20 mark, running out to an 18-7 lead and holding off West down the stretch.

Jenkins County ehads to state full of confidence
| statesboroherald.com

Jenkins County is just the type of team the opposition doesn’t want to see this time of year.
Playing with full confidence and the belief that they’re playing their best ball of the year, the Eagles start their quest for a state championship Friday at 6 p.m. against Bacon County in Dublin, Ga. “We went into the region (3-A) tournament fifth and came out third,” said JCHS coach Linda Sanders.

Gamecocks riding region title to state
| statesboroherald.com

The Screven County Lady Gamecocks stumbled in the last game of the regular season, dropping the finale to Southeast Bulloch 6-1. They bounced back, sweeping the Region 3-AA tournament and earning the No. 1 seed in the South Sectionals of the GHSA Class AA State Tournament. But coach Billy Pollock feels that his young Gamecocks are just getting started.

SEB draws Randolph-Clay in first round
| statesboroherald.com

Coach Aimee Civalier and her Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets were disappointed when they let the Region 3-AA softball championship slip out of their hands at home on Saturday. They picked up the No. 2 seed after losing to Screven County, but rather than being brought down, Civalier has used the experience to motivate her players and get them ready for the start of the South Sectionals of the GHSA Class AA State Tournament on Friday.
