The Loganville Christian Academy Lions took care of business last Friday night as they handed Westminster Christian Academy a 59-6 loss and progressed to the eight-man ICAGA regional playoffs. The Lions, now 7-1 overall and 4-1 in league play, were in control of the game from the outset.

Quarterback Michael Tamburo, who has led North Gwinnett to a 7-0 start and a No. 2 ranking, likely will miss Friday’s home game against South Forsyth after suffering a concussion against Peachtree Ridge. The junior has been undergoing ImPACT testing (Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing). The tests measure brain processing functions such as speed, memory and visual motor skills to determine the effect and severity of the concussion.

On a sun-drenched afternoon at Hallford Stadium, the St. Pius Golden Lions and the Cedar Grove Saints battled to the wire before the Saints pulled out a close 20-17 victory over the Lions. Each team played very well, but in the end, the Saints’ athletic wide-receiving corps and backfield led them to victory in a heated match.

Despite the defensive effort of North Springs’ Giovanni Smith (32), Lakeside’s Nick Orr (20) was able to rumble for a first down in Lakeside’s 24-0 win Friday over the Spartans. North Springs has yet to win or score in the 2007 season. The team’s next game is Friday against Cedar Grove, which edged St. Pius last week, 20-17.

At Prince Avenue, Katie Looney recorded 16 assists Tuesday to lead the Lady Wolverines to a 25-17, 25-5 victory in the first round of the Area 7-AA/A volleyball tournament. Lindsey Duncan paced Looney with eight aces, Jennifer Fleming and Anna Cearley contributed six kills apiece and Amanda Carithers added 13 digs as Prince Avenue (25-8) advanced to the second round of the area tournament.

The Loganville High School volleyball team has completed the 2007 regular season with a 26-9 overall record and a 4-1 mark in Region 8-AAAA. The league mark, placing the Lady Red Devils as the No. 2 seed, earned a bye in the first round of the region tournament to be held Thursday through Saturday in Dacula. LHS plays at 9 a.m. Saturday against the winner of the Habersham/Eastside match in the double elimination event.

The Newton Lady Rams gave Salem all it could handle in their final match of the regular season Tuesday. It took three games, but at the end the Lady Seminoles won the match 25-17, 10-25, 25-18. The first game looked like Salem was going to run away with it.

Rockdale volleyball coach Stephen Sansing didn’t get the result he was looking for in the Lady Bulldogs’ last tuneup before the Area 8-AAAA Tournament. Instead, Rockdale (21-19) fell in both its matches on a sad senior night, losing to Grayson and Ola. Still, Sansing sees the sliver lining in the losses in that they could be a motivating factor when the Lady Bulldogs hit the court Thursday in the area tournament.

Our Lady of Mercy (14-19, 4-5 region) took on Paideia and Landmark Christian (22-18, 6-1 region) faced Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy yesterday after the paper went to press.

Savannah Arts Academy swept Windsor Forest and Groves on Tuesday to wrap up the top seed for the Region 3-AAAAA volleyball tournament, which is set for Saturday at Johnson. Ashley Rutherford had a combined 25 digs and 10 kills to lead the Panthers (22-8, 8-0 Region 3-AAAAA) past the Knights and Rebels. Teammate Maggie Grimm added 16 digs.

George Walton Academy joins FPD, Stratford and Westfield Saturday in the GISA Final Four softball tournament. The Lady Bulldogs meet Stratford at 10 a.m. Saturday at Shuford Field in LaGrange in the double elimination tournament. George Walton, who owns a 3-2 season record against the other three schools, takes a 15-2 mark into the tournament.

The Newton senior softball players have seen their share of success in the last four years, but Friday will be the beginning of the final phase of their prep careers as the state sectionals begin at Lovejoy Regional Park. There are six seniors on this year’s Newton team: Shay Marks, Ashley Anthony, Jasmine White, Shandria Usher, Morgan Smith and Kierstie Moon (who was a regular starter as a freshman in 2004).

St. Pius X battled it out with Marist twice last week in region play, losing both times, 1-0 Thursday and 2-0 Friday. Marist, (22-6-1, 11-0) was crowned region champion in 6-AAAA, while Pius is seeded third with a 18-10-1 record. The Golden Lions were 9-2 in region play this season.

The John Milledge Academy varsity softball team saw its season come to an end Saturday, falling to FPD in a best two-out-of-three series 14-1 and 7-0. JMA head coach Gordon Veal said it was a tough weekend. “We just didn’t play very good at all,” Veal said. “We picked a bad time to struggle.”
