It’s all about the ring — an SIAC championship ring coach Mike White’s Rams have won every year since 2003. “The Tuskegee game means a lot,” said Rams punter Randy Allen, who punted twice to the Clark Atlanta 1-yard line Saturday night, resulting in two safeties and a 17-14 win.

East Coweta enters the home stretch of its regular season schedule against the “three best teams in the region” according to coach Danny Cronic when the Indians travel to Twelve Oaks Stadium to play Mundy’s Mill this Friday night. Newnan is on the road for the third straight week playing at Tri-Cities in East Point while Northgate and Heritage School play at home. The Vikings host Banneker while the Hawks face Holy Spirit Prep. East Coweta and Newnan are both rolling heading into this weekend.

Henry County will be well represented this weekend when area high school teams begin play in the state sectional softball tournaments at locations around Georgia. At stake is a trip to the Elite 8 in Columbus and a possible state championship. That’s something the Eagle’s Landing Christian softball team experienced first hand last season when it won the Class A title.

The John Milledge Academy varsity softball team saw its season come to an end Saturday, falling to FPD in a best two-out-of-three series 14-1 and 7-0. JMA head coach Gordon Veal said it was a tough weekend. “We just didn’t play very good at all,” Veal said. “We picked a bad time to struggle.”

The Atlanta Touchdown Club honors Chestatee’s Jo Jo Sweet Monday as High School Back of the Week for his performance in an October 5 win over Gainesville High. The War Eagles posted their first-ever win over the rival Red Elephants, 35-19. Sweet carried 25 times for 147 yards against Gainesville with a touchdown.

Rockdale, Salem, Alcovy and Eastside will all be trying to get that crucial first win of the Area 8-AAAA volleyball tournament as action begins Thursday at Rockdale and Habersham Central high schools. The 5 p.m. matches on Thursday feature Alcovy and Winder-Barrow facing off at Habersham, while Madison County and Jackson County play at Rockdale.
Habersham hosts Eastside at 6 p.m., and Salem and Cedar Shoals collide at Rockdale. Rockdale plays the winner of Madison County and Jackson County at 7 p.m.

East Jackson claimed the Region 8-AA fast-pitch softball title with an undefeated run through the region tournament. The Lady Eagles won the school’s first-ever region title in their inaugural season of play. The Lady Eagles beat North Oconee, 5-4 in an extra inning affair, to win the region title.
