Victory would be huge for program | augustachronicle.com
Reverse the teams’ records and this wouldn’t be one of the top games in the area. It’s no misprint, though, that Cross Creek is off to a 5-0 start and traditional power Washington County is 1-4. Despite the Golden Hawks’ record, Razorbacks coach Scott Tate is not taking them lightly.

Mays threatens but Tucker prevails | ajc.com
If there is a formula to win a football game by fumbling eight times, Tucker found one Friday night at Adams Stadium. The Class AAAA No. 3-ranked Tigers overcame a series of miscues, some forced by Mays’ gambling defense and others self-inflicted, to survive their biggest threat, 13-7 against the No. 8 Raiders. With its normally potent offense thrown out of rhythm throughout the game by Mays’ aggressive defense, Tucker (6-0 overall and 6-0 in Region 6-AAAA) went to its special teams to avoid the upset. Junior Jonathan Davis provided that by taking a direct snap out of a punt formation and running for 37 yards to set up Chris Simpson’s game-winning touchdown run with a little more than four minutes remaining.
King upsets No. 1 Stephenson | ajc.com
The musical chairs in the state’s highest classification will continue. After No. 10 M.L. King’s 14-6 victory over top-ranked Stephenson on Friday, the weekly polls will definitely see some shuffling. And Lions running back Cordellaro Jones has a suggestion as to who should hold the No. 1 spot. “We want to be No. 1,” he said. “We just beat the No. 1 team. They are overlooking us. We deserve a shot at No. 1.”
Chattahoochee nips Roswell in upset win | ajc.com
Chattahoochee proved it is no Cinderella team this year in its 13-10 upset victory against No. 8 Roswell on Friday. Earlier this season, the unranked Cougars went on the road and upset Camden County. Friday’s win was more important because it gave Chattahoochee (5-1) inside position for the subregion championship.
Landmark unifies, powers past Whitefield | ajc.com
After losses in three of its first four games, Landmark Christian had to be wondering what was going on. Quarterback Tanner Bryant was blunt in providing the answer. “We were playing selfish,” said the junior after his team dismantled Whitefield Academy 31-13 in the Region 5-A opener for both teams. “After the first four games, we were like this,” Tanner said, holding his hand wide open with the fingers spread apart. “Coach [Kenny] Dallas wanted us to become [a fist].”
S. Metro Roundup: Fayette Co. manhandles Creekside | ajc.com
The post-game chant roared by Fayette County players after their 28-0 dismantling of Creekside said it all: “We’re six and oh. We run this show.” The Tigers (6-0, 4-0) seized firm control of Region 2AAAA with the win, taking advantage of seven Creekside (5-2, 3-2) turnovers - four fumbles and three interceptions. For a team that has averaged just two wins a season since 2000, the victory was a statement game.
State Roundup: Northside-WR whips Baldwin | ajc.com
Top-ranked Class AAAA Northside-Warner Robins exploded for 14 points in the first five minutes of the second half and went on to whip rival Baldwin 31-0 Friday night. The Eagles (7-0, 4-0 Region 4-AAAA Division B) extended their winning streak to 21 straight. Fourth-ranked Baldwin falls to 4-1, 2-1. Northside took advantage of two turnovers, one on the first play from scrimmage of the second half and one as Baldwin fumbled in the end zone to end a scoring threat in the third quarter. Both plays changed the momentum of the game.
N. Metro Roundup: Tricks treat Berkmar to thrill win | ajc.com
Halloween is still more than two weeks away, but Berkmar got an early start pulling out its bag of tricks. Employing a fake punt, a double-reverse for a touchdown and big plays by their special teams, the visiting Patriots held off a determined Shiloh squad 26-21 in a thriller Friday night at Charlie Jordan Field in Snellville.
Northview offense sputters as Milton rallies | ajc.com
Milton wanted to keep Northview’s offense off the field. Fortunately for the Eagles, the Titans took care of that for them. Behind a pair of touchdown runs by tailback Lance Martin and two costly special-teams fumbles, Milton defeated Northview 21-14 on the road Friday night.
Chamblee defense blanks Dunwoody | ajc.com
The offense had been prolific the first five weeks, but the defense stole the show on this night. Chamblee forced two turnovers and shut down a Dunwoody offense that had looked good the first few games. The Bulldogs offense turned both those turnovers into points, as No. 10 Chamblee beat Dunwoody 27-0.
Rams still dominating | ajc.com
Grayson continued its season of affirmation Friday with another impressive victory over another recent AAAAA champion. This time, once-dominant Parkview fell to the Rams’ efficient offense and staunch defense. And at homecoming, no less. The Big Orange Jungle was a little blue after Grayson’s decisive 19-0 victory — the first region loss for the Panthers to someone other than Brookwood in “who knows when,” Grayson coach Mickey Conn said.
Ridge rally deflates as North chalks up victory | ajc.com
Patrick Thompson, however, was ready. He threw a 30-yard strike on his first pass, jump-starting the decisive 94-yard touchdown drive. Thompson’s poise helped No. 3 North Gwinnett beat No. 6 Peachtree Ridge 31-19 before a capacity crowd.
Perspective: HS coaching suits Martin to a tee | ajc.com
Tee Martin hoped that coaching high school football would flesh out a resume that’s rich in playing accomplishments. Seven games into his new job as the quarterbacks coach at North Cobb High in Kennesaw, the former Tennessee quarterback says he’s having so much fun that he might stay.
South surprises Central with big plays in win | ajc.com
In a game full of big plays, it was fitting that South Gwinnett needed one more to preserve its surprising 36-29 win over Central Gwinnett in Lawrenceville. With three seconds remaining, Central’s Diante Drake took at pass at the line of scrimmage at his own 40, cut across the field, found a gap on the left side and turned toward the end zone, only to be tackled in the open field by South’s Ian Graves at the South 20.
Berkmar just gets past Shiloh | ajc.com
Halloween is still over two weeks away, but Berkmar got an early start pulling out its bag of tricks. Employing a fake punt, a double-reverse for a touchdown and big plays by their special teams, the visiting Patriots held off a determined Shiloh squad 26-21 in a thriller Friday night at Charlie Jordan Field in Snellville.
Hab Central hammers Dacula | ajc.com
It was the kind of beatdown rarely experienced at Dacula, and never in head coach Kevin Maloof’s 17-year tenure. Habersham Central’s 42-7 drubbing of the host Falcons on Friday should serve notice to the rest of Class AAAA. Watch out for coach Gene Cathcart’s Raiders.
Collins Hill tops N. Forsyth for first ‘07 win | ajc.com
It took half a season, but Collins Hill finally notched its first win. The Eagles, looking much more like teams of the past, controlled North Forsyth and rolled to a 21-13 victory. The Eagles pounded the ball, with Charles Perkins doing most of the damage. The sophomore running back was a workhorse, carrying 33 times for 174 yards and a touchdown. He also threw a touchdown pass.
GAC drops shocker to Avondale | ajc.com
When quarterback Colton Chapple’s errant pitchout was recovered by Avondale’s Antonio Scott at the Greater Atlanta Christian (GAC) 1-yard line on the game’s very first play from scrimmage, Spartan coach Jimmy Chupp could only pray for a better ending. It never happened.
Buford easily handles Holy Innocents’ | ajc.com
Two trick plays by visiting Holy Innocents’ provided all the shock and awe at Buford’s Tom Riden Stadium Friday night. Between those plays, Buford, Class AA’s top team, performed the dirty work. The host Wolves scored 48 unanswered points in cruising to a 55-14 victory over Holy Innocents’ on homecoming night.
Brookwood routs overmatched Meadowcreek | ajc.com

Mill Creek shuts out ineffective Forsyth Central | ajc.com
Mill Creek overcame five turnovers and 12 penalties Friday to turn back visiting Forsyth Central 16-0, putting the Hawks in a tie for second place in Region 7-AAAAA. The Hawks (5-2, 4-1) put forth a stout defensive effort, creating four turnovers of their own and limiting the Bulldogs (2-4, 1-3) to just 71 rushing yards on 25 attempts.
North Gwinnett 31, Peachtree Ridge 19 | ajc.com
With starting quarterback Michael Tamburo knocked out of the game, North Gwinnett’s Tyler Jarry and the Bulldogs’ offensive line took over. North’s line gave backup Patrick Thompson plenty of time to complete a 30-yard pass. Then Jarry used a hard-fought touchdown run to seal a 31-19 win over Peachtree Ridge on Friday at Tom Robinson Memorial Stadium.
North shows character in face of uncertainty | ajc.com
The game clock read 10:56 in the fourth quarter. It could have been the moment North Gwinnett’s football team folded. Defending co-state champion Peachtree Ridge had just unleashed a second-half rally, turning a 24-0 lopsided game into a 24-19 nailbiter. Then it got worse. The Bulldogs’ starting quarterback and the focal point of their offense, Michael Tamburo, got slammed to the ground and suffered a game-ending concussion.
Collins Hill 21, North Forsyth 13 | ajc.com
The monkey is finally off Collins Hill’s back. A program that is not used to losing seasons, let alone an 0-5 start, got its first win of the 2007 season, defeating North Forsyth 21-13 in Region 7-AAAAA play Friday night at Fahring Field. Dating to last season, the victory snapped a six-game losing skid for Collins Hill (1-5 overall, 1-3 region) - the longest winless streak in school history.
Grayson 19, Parkview 0 | ajc.com
The first half saw a combined 85 yards of penalties, a muffed Parkview punt and a blocked and missed Grayson field goal. For two teams that handed the ball off to 10 different combined backs in the first half, the lone score came on a 38-yard strike from Grayson’s Tyler Horne to Sean Adegbola late in the second quarter.
Mill Creek 16, Forsyth Central 0 | ajc.com
If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it 100 times every March in the NCAA Basketball Championships - survive and advance. Mill Creek did just that at home on Friday night in knocking off Forsyth Central 16-0 in an important Region 7-AAAAA football game as the Hawks celebrated Homecoming 2007. A masterpiece it wasn’t, but Mill Creek moved to 5-2 overall and upped its region record to an impressive 4-1 with three games left.
South Gwinnett 36, Central Gwinnett 29 | ajc.com
With nearly every play having the potential to go the distance, no one at Friday night’s renewal of the South Gwinnett-Central Gwinnett rivalry had the sense it was over until the final whistle. That was especially true when Diante Drake broke free on the game’s last play with one man to beat to pull the host Black Knights even.
Apalachee 31, Elbert County 6 | ajc.com
Sophomore running John Lee made Shane Davis’ return to the Granite Bowl victorious. Lee ran for more than 130 yards and scored two touchdowns as Apalachee defeated Elbert County 31-6 on Friday night. Bulldogs break out | rockdalecitizen.com
It took six weeks, but the Rockdale football team finally got its first win of the season.
And what better way for the Bulldogs to get their first victory than a 22-14 come-from-behind win in overtime against Region 8-AAAA South foe and county rival Heritage. “Our kids played well, and we won’t take this for granted,” Rockdale coach William Johnson said.
Rams get first win | rockdalecitizen.com

Seminoles tame Tigers on homecoming night | rockdalecitizen.com
Salem is proving to be a resilient football team this fall.
Once again on Friday night, the Seminoles (5-1 overall, 2-0 in 8-AAAA South) battled their way through a dose of adversity, fighting off a game effort by Alcovy (2-4 overall, 1-1 in 8-AAAA South) to claim a 27-7 victory on homecoming. Salem also had to play two-and-a-half quarters without star quarterback Terrence Davis, who limped off the field in the second quarter with an apparent hamstring injury.
Jaguars hold off Eastside | rockdalecitizen.com
Scott Wilkins had confidence in the Jaguars. Even with seconds left in the fourth quarter and Eastside pushing for a tying touchdown, the Cedar Shoals coach knew his athletes would find a way to win. And they did. The Jaguars successfully held off the Eagles as time expired and Eastside quarterback Justin Wray was tackled just 14 yards shy of a touchdown for a 27-20 homecoming victory at The Jungle.
Rockdale boots away lead, falls to Dacula 8-6 | rockdalecitizen.com

Last week, mistakes plagued the Mustangs as they were hammered 58-7 by the East Coweta Indians. “I was concerned about our focus after we scored in the beginning of the game,” said Cougars head coach Robert Herring. “The kids played hard the entire game and I was very happy with our execution.”
Lions get late TD pass to edge Vikings | timesherald.com
Lewis Kendall threw a 13-yard pass to Marquis Jackson with 28 seconds left to lift the Westlake Lions to a dramatic 19-13 win over Northgate here Friday night. The play capped a 52-yard, 11-play drive for the winners that took just over five and a half minutes off the fourth quarter clock and deprived the Vikings of any realistic opportunity of answering. Northgate had taken a 13-12 lead with 10:45 left in the game on Derrick Brisbane’s five-yard run, but it didn’t stand up.
