Clarke Central’s Robinson named player of week
| onlineathens.com

After suffering a left ankle injury on Sept. 28 against Madison County, Clarke Central’s Darreion Robinson was in obvious pain when he suited up for the Gladiators’ Region 8-AAAA North game against Dacula this past Friday night. Robinson missed three days of practice last week, and there were concerns about his fitness to compete against the Falcons. But the 5-foot-8, 170-pound senior running back proved why he’s been a major catalyst during the Gladiators’ best start since 2003.

NWR among state’s all-time greats?
| ajc.com

I saw Northside-Warner Robins play for the first time this season last week and wrote a story about the team’s fans and their high opinion of their undefeated, nationally ranked, reigning Class AAAA champions. Funny thing was that the first two guys I spoke with had seen perhaps the two greatest Georgia teams ever — 1976 Warner Robins and 1971 Valdosta.

Extra Miles

Kenny Miles never imagined his senior season would get off to such great start. And why would he? As the backup to Demetre Ledlum, the county’s leading rusher last year, Miles only got a handful of carries the last two years.

First place in 7-AAAAA on the line Friday
| gwinnettdailypost.com

Peachtree Ridge has taken a roundabout way to becoming one of the state’s top programs.
The Lions shared the Class AAAAA state championship last year, skipping the traditional stepping stones of beating neighborhood rivals and winning region championships. A win Friday at North Gwinnett would put Peachtree Ridge on course to claiming its first region title in the team’s five-year history. A win over North would also be the first in school history.

| mariettadailyjournal.com

The Walton football team was faced with a crucial decision in the second quarter two weeks ago in its stunning 13-10 upset over defending state co-champion Roswell. The Raiders were stuck at the Hornet 41-yard line on fourth down, and with the score tied, 3-3, they needed to decide if they were going to punt the ball away or kick a 58-yard field goal.

| rockdalecitizen.com

At the midway point in the regular season, only Class AAAAA experienced some changes near the top in the Associated Press high school football poll. The 2007 season for the Northgate Vikings football squad is becoming one that is filled with streaks but in a negative direction. In Friday night’s 18-0 loss to the Creekside Seminoles at Henry Seldon Field, the Vikings dropped their fourth straight contest after opening the season with a 16-3 win over the Central-Carrollton Lions on Aug. 31. One positive streak in the game for the Vikings was for a defense that allowed less than 24 points in a game since the win over the Lions.

Jimmy Howard could have ended up playing against the University of West Georgia this season with Gulf South Conference rival Valdosta State. Just as easily, the junior wide receiver might not be playing football at all this fall. The Wolves are certainly glad that neither of those scenarios panned out. In his first year at West Georgia, Howard has been an integral part of the team’s new spread offense.

Villa Rica lost its first six region games before finally winning one in eight innings in its final game of the regular season. Its opponent in that 6-5 victory? Cedartown.
