After squeezing out a 14-13 win over Monroe Area last year, Oconee County coach Nick Saltaformaggio didn’t expect his team to completely dominate the Purple Hurricanes on Friday night. The Warriors didn’t let up this season and conquered a 41-7 Region 8-AAA contest. The victory was the Warriors’ third of the season. With the win, Oconee County has an unblemished region record of 2-0 and are at the top of the standings with Stephens County and Hart County.

After a rare week of no change in the Class AAAAA rankings, the highest class is ready to be rocked again Friday night when two games match top-10 teams. At Hallford Stadium in DeKalb County, No. 1 Stephenson (5-0) plays No. 10 M.L. King (6-0) in the first game between undefeated DeKalb teams this late in a season since Oct. 26, 1984, when No. 2 Southwest DeKalb defeated No. 8 Towers 34-0.

The East Coweta Indians found a number of ways to score Saturday night as they overwhelmed the Morrow Mustangs 58-7 in a Region 4-AAAAA match-up at Twelve Oaks Stadium. The win was the fifth in a row for the Indians after the season opening loss to Oxford (Ala.) and are 2-0 in region play, while the Mustangs fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the region.

The Newnan Cougars’ offensive machine continued humming along in high gear Friday night.
The Cougars had the ball nine times in their 48-15 win over Paulding County and scored touchdowns on seven of those possessions including the first five of the first half. Since the second half of the South Gwinnett game Newnan has scored points on 18 of its 25 possessions (17 touchdowns and one field goal).

Newnan High cross country coach Ben Tarleton told the media Thursday that he wasn’t expecting too much from his squads come Saturday’s Asics Invitational at McIntosh Reserve. Tarleton and Newnan community coach Brad Gresham have been mixing in a great deal of interval training and the head coach knew the process would soon take action. “It caught up with us here today. But it will make us only stronger come county and region,” explained Tarleton.

Lowndes dropped a key Region 1-AAAAA softball game Saturday morning, falling 2-0 to Houston County at the Morris-Coats Field of Dreams. The loss dropped the Vikettes (16-10) into third place in the region at 7-3. Lowndes and Houston had been tied for second going into the game.

Tuskegee fullback John Pascley couldn’t immediately decide which was tougher. Carrying the Tuskegee offense on his back or lugging around the huge Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic MVP trophy. “I believe walking with this thing right here (is tougher),” said Pascley, a 5-foot-9, 199-pound redshirt freshman.

Jesse Hartley kicked a 54-yard field goal on the final play of the game to give Georgia Southern a 41-38 victory over South Dakota State on Saturday. Hartley’s game winning kick, a career long, was set up by an interception by Carson Hill with 21 seconds remaining. The Jackrabbits got the ball back with 31 seconds to play and the score tied but chose not to sit on it. South Dakota State quarterback Ryan Berry threw for 335 yards, 203 in the second half when he led his team back from a 31-7 halftime deficit.

Jamaal Clark secured the Valdosta State football team its fifth-straight victory of the season Saturday, against a Southern Arkansas team that refused to let the game go. VSU avoided its first loss of the season at Wilkins Stadium, defeating Southern Arkansas, 33-21.

I have to say, that I could not agree with you in 100% regarding The G.A.S. Pump (Oct 8), but it’s just my opinion, which could be wrong
