Monroe falls to Oconee in 41-7 region loss | waltontribune.com
Only two weeks after Monroe regained some momentum in the season, the Purple Hurricanes saw it all disappear as they fell to Oconee County 41-7. The ‘Canes were unable to produce consistently in the game, their only score coming on a defensive play as Cortez Etchison intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and ran it back for a touchdown.
Loganville evens subregion record | waltontribune.com
It doesn’t matter the sport — whichever team makes the fewest mistakes usually wins the game. Loganville High School took advantage of three Winder-Barrow miscues and emerged with a 21-7 victory Friday night. The triumph lifted the Red Devils to a 2-3 overall record and, more importantly, a 1-1 mark in Region 8-AAAA (subregion A).

Lovett roars to rally past GAC | ajc.com
Lovett, which had not beaten GAC in four previous tries, found itself behind 10-0 early.
But the visiting Lions scored 23 unanswered points for a 23-17 victory. Lovett controlled the line of scrimmage, intercepted two passes and did not commit a turnover. Lovett’s Jack Hall (33) kicks his first field goal with Drew Stockton (9) holding at Greater Atlanta Christian Friday. Fullback Bo Anderson secured the victory with 30 seconds left by recovering GAC’s onside kick. “I’m just glad our kids had the wherewithal to respond to that initial punch they gave us and make something positive happen,” Lovett coach Mike Muschamp said. “To beat a class program like GAC on their field, that says an awful lot about our kids.”
Marietta pounds McEachern, keeps Region hopes alive | ajc.com
Rebounding from a loss to Harrison, Marietta kept its Region 5-AAAAA aspirations alive with a 20-3 victory against McEachern. Quarterback Stanley Jennings had another passing night of more than 200 yards, completing 10 of 17 for 201 yards and two touchdowns. But it might have been a series where Jennings wasn’t on the field that served the Blue Devils best. Jennings had 92 yards on 6-of-7 passing on Marietta’s first two possessions before being walloped from behind by McEachern’s Jerimia Curry and fumbling.
King nips Douglass in thriller | ajc.com
Redemption was sweet for M.L. King sophomore kicker Jeremiah Wilson. After missing two extra-point attempts, Wilson booted a 35-yard field goal as time expired to save the tenth-ranked Lions’ 22-21 win over Douglass Friday at Lakewood Stadium. The win improved the Lions to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 2-AAAAA as they head into next week’s showdown with top-ranked Stephenson. Trailing 21-13 entering the fourth quarter, the Lions mounting a comeback attempt.
Sequoyah bid to upset Cherokee fails | ajc.com
It looked for a while like it might be a smooth sail to the finish, but Sequoyah wasn’t about to let Cherokee wrest control over Cherokee County without a fight. The Warriors (5-0, 4-0 in Region 5-AAAA) nearly blew a 28-point fourth-quarter lead, as Sequoyah scored 21 unanswered points but couldn’t recover one last onside kick to prevent Cherokee from winning 35-28 at Skip Pope Stadium.
Whitewater caps furious Banneker rally | ajc.com
Banneker is the epitome of a team holding lighting in a bottle. The explosive Trojans’ lightning got loose twice Friday night. But doing that twice is not the way to beat heady Whitewater, as the Wildcats kept that Trojans bottle capped the rest of the game to pull out a critical 20-12 Region 2-AAAA victory.
Dunwoody posts clutch win over Blessed Trinity | ajc.com
Dunwoody’s Cameron Ford said he “made the best catch of his life” in a 31-21 win over Blessed Trinity on Friday. Ford made a leaping grab in the back of the end zone on a 7-yard lob pass from quarterback Erick Cooper with 1:38 to preserve the win for the Wildcats (4-1).
N. Atlanta racks Riverwood in romp | ajc.com
Nothing worked for Riverwood Friday night. Even the scoreboard gave up. Visiting North Atlanta spoiled the Raiders homecoming, and in the process, earned its first victory of the season in stunning fashion. The Warriors (1-4, 1-1 Region 5-AAA/Division B) topped Riverwood 32-6 in a game marred by sloppy play. It started with the first kick.
Grayson dominates South in shutout | ajc.com
This was a straight-up physical mismatch Friday night, a punishing performance by Grayson that left South Gwinnett wholly powerless. The 32-0 final score only told a portion of the dominance. All the euphoria South Gwinnett experienced in knocking off Parkview last week was whittled away under the force of persistent Ram headbutts. Hardly was South Gwinnett ever in the game after Grayson’s Ean Pemberton scored from 8 yards to culminate the game-opening drive.
N. Forsyth no match for Mill Creek | ajc.com
North Forsyth County brought the pageantry to the playing field on Homecoming Night. Visiting Mill Creek, in turn, countered with better coaching, a stonewall defense and a methodical offense in its 35-9 win. “When you become somebody’s homecoming opponent, it becomes your job to make the other team think twice before doing it again,” Hawks coach Shannon Jarvis said.
Blanking Duluth no sweat for North | ajc.com
North Gwinnett administrators fielded several ticket requests Friday afternoon for the Bulldogs’ Region 7-AAAAA showdown with Peachtree Ridge next week. While fans were planning ahead, the Bulldogs took care of business on the field Friday to make sure the matchup with the defending AAAAA state champions still has meaning. North, ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAA, put away Duluth 32-0 Friday to improve to 6-0 and remain unbeaten in the region at 4-0. Duluth drops to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the region.
Norcross cruises past South Forsyth | ajc.com
Coming off its first regular-season defeat in more than a year, Norcross got back on track. But it took awhile. With the exception of D.J. Adams’ 80-yard touchdown run, Norcross did little in the first half against a gritty South Forsyth team. But the Blue Devils responded with 20 second-half points while shutting out the War Eagles and holding them below 50 total yards of offense in the second half. In the end, Norcross cruised to a 27-3 victory to improve to 5-1, 3-1 in Region 7-AAAAA play.
Ridge romps past Forsyth Central | ajc.com
The last thing Peachtree Ridge needed after knocking off the state’s No. 1 team was a letdown against Forsyth Central. The Lions’ 55-7 victory Friday night suggests that was never a problem. After a scoreless first quarter, Peachtree Ridge made up for lost time in the second, scoring 34 points as quarterback Asher Clark — who ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more — led the attack.
Parkview squeaks by Shiloh | ajc.com
It wasn’t pretty, and it won’t make any highlight shows, but Parkview persevered and came back from a 7-0 halftime deficit to beat Shiloh 10-7 Friday night at Charlie Jordan Field. The Panthers (4-1) rebounded after a tough 20-9 loss the previous week to South Gwinnett.
Decatur wholly overmatched against Buford | ajc.com
Buford senior running back Demetrius Murray rushed for 75 yards and accounted for three touchdowns Friday as top-ranked Buford cruised to another Region 6-AA win, 47-6 over homestanding Decatur.Murray bruised the Bulldogs secondary for his third score to open the second half, when he rushed five times on the drive for 35 yards. A 12-yard run by the South Florida commitment preceded his 5-yard score to give Buford a 40-6 lead.
Central blasts past Meadowcreek | ajc.com
Cut Meadowcreek a little slack if the Mustangs are having nightmares about a Central Gwinnett jersey bearing the number 7. Central’s Diante Drake is responsible for their bad visions. Drake terrorized the Mustangs Friday night, scoring all five Central Gwinnett touchdowns while leading the Black Knights to a 35-7 win at Meadowcreek. Drake rolled up 230 yards on 24 carries for the Black Knights (3-2), 1-1, 8-AAAAA, who got their first region victory. Meadowcreek (0-5, 0-2, 8-AAAAA) remained winless for the season.
Brookwood spoils Berkmar bid for 5-0 start | ajc.com
Brookwood running back Kenny Miles had a few special reasons to put together a big game against Berkmar. Not only was the senior tailback celebrating his 17th birthday, but Miles got to run against, around and through some old classmates. A former Berkmar student, Miles buried his old school, rushing for 273 yards and three touchdowns in Brookwood’s 28-13 win.
Avondale fights, but Wesleyan wins | ajc.com
Wesleyan fed visiting Avondale a steady diet of Derren Evans, and the senior tailback delivered with 138 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wolves to a 28-20 homecoming victory Friday night in an offensive show at Robinson Field in Norcross. The highlights began early as Avondale took the opening kick and marched 62 yards in 10 plays, with Carlton Johnson connecting with Greg Boyd on an 11-yard touchdown pass for an early 6-0 Blue Devils lead as the extra-point attempt was blocked.
GRAYSON 32, SOUTH GWINNETT 0 | gwinnettdailypost.com
Grayson’s strategy in its matchup with crosstown rival South Gwinnett on Friday night was quite simple - gain possession of the football and play keep away. The Rams executed that game plan pretty much to perfection, running nearly twice as many plays as the visiting Comets and holding a nearly 3-to-1 advantage in time of possession in rolling to a 32-0 victory at the newly-christened Britt-Moody Field at Grayson Community Stadium.
Parkview 10, Shiloh 7 | gwinnettdailypost.com
Parkview has never lost consecutive region games under head coach Cecil Flowe and after surviving a scare from Shiloh on Friday still hasn’t. The Panthers took advantage of several Shiloh miscues in the second half and scored 10 unanswered points to beat the Generals 10-7 at Shiloh Community Stadium.
Mill Creek 35, North Forsyth 9 | gwinnettdailypost.com
Lenny Brooks and Mill Creek’s football team spoiled North Forsyth’s homecoming and an upset bid by the hosts on Friday night. Brooks scored four touchdowns, one in the air and the rest on the ground, to lead the Hawks (4-2, 3-1 in Region 7-AAAAA) to a 35-9 victory. Brooks carried the ball 15 times for 156 yards, 136 of those coming in the second half.
Peachtree Ridge 55, Forsyth Central 7 | gwinnettdailypost.com
Despite both teams coming off big wins last week, Friday’s game between Peachtree Ridge and Forsyth Central turned into a lopsided affair. After knocking off then No. 1 Norcross last week, Peachtree Ridge overcame a scoreless first quarter to rout Forsyth Central 55-7 to spoil the Bulldogs’ homecoming. The win improved Peachtree Ridge to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in Region 7-AAAAA, setting up a showdown with fellow region front-runner North Gwinnett next Friday.
North Gwinnett 32, Duluth 0 | gwinnettdailypost.com
North Gwinnett head football coach Bob Sphire was concerned about Friday night’s game with Duluth being a “trap” game for his Bulldogs - as next week’s huge matchup against Peachtree Ridge loomed on the calendar. As it turned out, it wasn’t a trap game for North Gwinnett, just a bad snap game for Duluth.
Central Gwinnett 35, Meadowcreek 7 | gwinnettdailypost.com
The cure for ailing Central Gwinnett’s two straight losses was simple: an extra heavy dose of Diante Drake. The Black Knights rode their star running back from the opening snap and he responded with a career-high five touchdowns and rushed for 208 yards in a 35-7 win Friday night at Meadowcreek.
WESLEYAN 28, AVONDALE 20 | gwinnettdailypost.com
It takes four quarters to win a football game and Wesleyan used all of it, including a late game defensive stand, to secure a 28-20 victory over Avondale. Wesleyan head coach Franklin Pridgen was happy with the way the game was won. “Our defense has been keeping us in games all year. The fact that they did it again (Friday) night is no surprise,” he said.
Clarke Central 28, Dacula 21 | gwinnettdailypost.com
Battling toe-to-toe with Clarke Central in a Region 8-AAAA, Division A first-place showdown, Dacula watched a one-point lead dissolve in a matter of minutes midway through the fourth quarter as the Gladiators rallied for a 28-21 win over the Falcons at Barron Field. Trailing 14-13 and pinned on its own 10-yard line, Clarke Central (4-1-1, 3-0) struck quickly as senior Darrieon Robinson broke loose on a 90-yard scoring run as the Gladiators regained the lead in a seesaw football game.
Barnes’ late surge leads Lions over Rams | rockdalecitizen.com
The Newton Rams’ defense had a hard time stopping Luella’s Richard Barnes as he ran for 172 yards in the fourth quarter, and the Lions kept the Rams winless in the 33-14 matchup Friday at The Lions Den. Newton’s defense had a tendency to bend but not break — until Barnes touched the ball in the fourth quarter. Luella was able to drive the ball a few plays at a time, but the Rams’ defense never let them get a rhythm. Barnes finished the night with 270 yards on 21 touches.
Whitewater wins third straight, tops Banneker 20-12 | thecitizen.com
The Wildcats got two touchdowns from Thomas Frierson and two field goals from J.C. Jennings on their way to the win. Whitewater’s defense gave up two big plays for close to 155 ards and then held the Trojan offense to negative eight yards besides that.
Starr’s Mill clobbers McIntosh 27-0 | thecitizen.com
Miles Jaye just had a night he will never forget. Making his first career varsity start at quarterback in place of Matt Sweat, who was out with a pulled muscle in his leg, Jaye, a sophomore, threw for a touchdown and led Starr’s Mill’s offense to three others in the Panthers’ 27-0 victory over Region 2-AAAA rival McIntosh on homecoming night Friday at Panther Stadium in Fayetteville.
Defense not enough for Vikings | thetimesherald.com
The Northgate Vikings played solid defense against the Creekside Seminoles Friday night in a Region 2-AAAA football matchup at Henry Seldon Field but it wasn’t enough in an 18-0 loss. Since opening the season with a win over Central-Carrollton, the Vikings have dropped four in a row overall and are 0-3 in region play this season and are riding a five-game skid that began last year.
Hawks squander big lead | thetimesherald.com
For almost two quarters Friday night, homecoming at the Heritage School appeared to be ending with a win by the Hawks over the Central Fellowship Lancers. However, the turnover bug returned to the Heritage School campus and the Lancers were able to come from behind for a 35-24 GISA non-region football victory. The loss was the fourth straight for the Hawks after starting the season with a 2-0 record.
Columbus Area
Hawks break open game early vs. Jordan | ledgerenquirer.com

Nick Burks was the big offensive star as he caught a screen pass and went 54 yards for one touchdown and broke around end for a 62-yard touchdown run all in the first quarter as the Hawks broke to a quick 16-0 lead.
Griswould’s recovery secures win | ledgerenquirer.com
Even though he scored a pair of first-half touchdowns, Shaw running Kyle Griswould’s biggest contribution Thursday night was recovering an onside kick attempt in the final two minutes. After Kendrick scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, Griswould’s recovery secured the Shaw lead as the Raiders held on for a 30-16 victory at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.
Panther pride | ledgerenquirer.com
While Opelika scored 44 points last season, that’s not what sticks out most in Smiths Station linebacker Marcus McCrary’s mind. “All I can remember is that we just gave up,” McCrary said. “We gave up.” McCrary and the rest of the Panthers don’t expect that to happen this year.
