Good high school special team players are few and far between. This isn’t the case at George Walton Academy where Cody Hutchings has made a name for himself with a strong right leg. The senior kicker/punter is 6-for-8 on field goals this season and is averaging more than 40 yards per punt. His four field goals and precise punting last week helped the Bulldogs beat Brentwood, 28-13.

Another week, Another comeback for the Adairsville Tigers. Last week, the Trion Bulldogs jumped out to a 12-0 lead over Adairsville early in the second quarter, but for the second straight game, the Tigers came roaring back to post a convincing victory. Adairsville scored 31 unanswered points to beat the Bulldogs, 31-12, a week after the Tigers scored 49 straight points to paste Temple, 56-27.

Last week, the Woodland Wildcats experienced their best game of the season with 516 yards of total offense in their loss to Lithia Springs, 42-34. Of that total, 448 of the yards were on the ground, led by running back Javawn Henry who had 230. “Hopefully we can put together 500 yards every week,” said Woodland head coach Steve Hamilton.

The Woodland girls finished third as a team with 118 points while Cartersville runner Lindsay Anderson finished second in 20:10. The Lady Wildcats were led by Katie Rutledge (21:20) in eighth place, followed by Sarah McFarland (22:32) in 19th place.

Kidd has been mowing down batters all season, but there is perhaps no team she enjoys facing more than county and Region 2-AAAA rival Fayette County. Kidd’s one-hit, 16-strikeout, complete-game performance helped lead the McIntosh Lady Chiefs to a 13-0 victory Tuesday over Fayette in Fayetteville.

In a battle of the top two teams in Class AA, Greater Atlanta Christian came away with both a victory and the Region 6-AA title against Buford Tuesday. The Lady Spartans roughed up Buford’s Melissa Higginbotham for 12 hits in a 4-2 win and will be the top seed in the Region Tournament, which begins Friday.

Whitewater went 6-1 in a tournament over the weekend, beating Grayson (25-20, 25-22), Habersham Central (25-8, 25-12), Newton (25-8, 25-6), Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (16-25, 25-13, 25-14), Mt. Pisgah (26-24, 25-14) and Chambleee (25-23, 25-14).
Whitewater’s loss was to Norcross (25-23, 25-23).
