After experiencing success in the first three games of the season, the Heritage Hawks have hit the negative experience of a football team. The 25-14 loss suffered by the Hawks Friday night at the hands of the Nathanael Greene Patriots became the third in a row after opening with two straight wins.

The bad. The Northgate Viking football team dropped its third consecutive game on Friday in Fayetteville against the Tigers. The good. Progress was made and no one in attendance could question the effort of the 1-3 football team. Northgate, led by Malcolm Poindexter and his 123 yards rushing, had its best offensive game of the season.

Lowndes High breezed through its own softball tournament this weekend, until it reached the championship game. The Vikettes fell 7-1 to longtime Region 1-AAAAA rival Tift County in the finals of the Gold division bracket Saturday night at the Vikette Invitational, held at Freedom Park.

The 2007 Aubrae Gunderson Invitational went off without a hitch Saturday at the Georgia International Horse Park as some of the state’s top cross country runners hit the trails. The event featured six varsity races in three divisions — red, white and blue.

It may be good for the rest of the state that Newnan’s William Pike just took up cross country running. The Cougar junior, a first-year runner, breezed on Saturday to the title of the Aubrae Gunderson Invitational at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers. It marked the second consecutive week that Pike hit the line before all others.
