LR Coaches’ Quick Hits with Monty Long
Q: What is your vision for the season?
A: The Wildcats vision is always to be the state champions. After winning 23 of them, we tend to want to keep it up and win more. We expect to win [the championship] every year. We did not have alot of success last season. It was the worst season in Wildcat history. We were 1-9, so we look to be much improved over last season.
Q:What are you looking to improve on last season?
A: We are looking to improve in every area. Our offense was sporadic, our kicking game was not where it needed to be, and our defense was young. We have 10 of 11 starters back on defense, so that should be much improved. We have new kickers this season, and the coaches are really working hard on special teams. Our QB is a senior and he has started every game since his freshman year, so with his experience, our offense should click. So, in a nutshell, we look to improve in all areas…..offense, defense, and special teams
Q: Are there any key new additions to your team?
A: We had a running back [that transfered] from Cook County. His name is David Arnold, and based on what I saw in the spring and thus far in camp, he is a talented young man. As I stated earlier, our entire defense returns, so we should be ready on that side of the ball. We have had to rebuild the offensive line, but according to the coaches, we are way far ahead of last year’s line at this point.
Q: Who are your team leaders?
A: Team leaders would be QB Michael Turner, LB Curtis Witherspoon, LB Young Roberson, SS Darrris Roberts, C Allen Scruggs, OG Chris Daniels, RB David Arnold, RB Marcus McNair, DE Jamaal Hunter, and TE Derrick Sharper.
Q:How is your team dealing with the pressure of expectations?
A: This team has a great attitude. I feel that they are hungry to get some revenge for all of the close losses that happened last season. The senior leadership has been great. The team’s expectations are very high.
