Saturday Action from the 2007 Georgia FC Invitational

It was a sweltering Saturday at Bethesda Park – thank goodness we had a little American futbol to watch.

Hundreds of fans flocked to Day One of the 2007 Georgia Futbol Club Invitational, and were treated to some fantastic soccer. With the mercury rising to 104 degrees, this year’s participants battled through some oppressive on-field conditions to give the fans a show. LocalReplay was there for every kick, header and slide tackle. Check out our Opening Day Division Recaps below, and make sure to view our video and photo highlights here (updated throughout the weekend).

Under 13 Boys
The first whistles of the day blew at 8 a.m., and spectators at the Bethesda Butera pitch witnessed the powerhouse GFC U13 Elite square off against an equally formidable TYSA Triumph Green team. GFC got on the board early in the first half and never looked back, turning a 3-0 halftime lead into a 4-0 victory. Ambush U13 Red enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 victory of their own, as they took down TYSA U12 Green. The final early bird start saw the Gwinnett Hurricanes falling big to Alianza SC, 5 to 1. Allianza’s offensive prowess continued into the 11 o’clock hour, when Alianza smoked a typically tough TYSA Triumph Green squad 7-0. The Ambush also looked strong in their second match, silencing the Hurricanes 7-1. GFC Elite held their own against a young TYSA U12 Green team, beating them 4-1. Saturday’s Under 13 Boys’ action makes for an interesting Day two, with three teams (GFC, Alianza and Ambush) tied at the top of the division, each with six points. Under 13 Girls
The day’s U13 Girls’ Division action resulted in all four teams scoring points in the standings. The 95 Lady Gunners and the ASA Xtreme 95 Blue stood toe-to-toe in the division’s first game, with neither team flinching in a 0-0 stalemate. Georgia FC 96 Elite and GFC U13 Athena Elite also tied in their early match up, 1:1. During the second batch of games, the Xtreme edged out Georgia FC 1-0 in a contest that featured a number of close calls and near goals, while GFC Athena Elite matched goals with the Lady Gunners, ending up in a 1-1 deadlock. Although the Xtreme sits alone at the top with four points, this division is up for grabs. [Click here for official results and Sunday’s schedule]

Boys 11/12

Under 11/12 Boys
While Flight A of the division is nearly decided, Flight B is there for the taking. The division’s first game ended in a 3-3 draw between the Alpharetta Ambush 96 Red and the Stars Orange. The Ambush 96 White outlasted the ECYMCA Strikers White in a match that was more closely-contested than the 5-1 score indicates. In a contest between two teams of the tournament host organization, Georgia FC Man U cruised to a 10-2 victory over Georgia FC Blackburn, while fellow FC-mate Georgia FC Chelsea emerged victorious over Tornado Soccer FC, 3-2. During the 1:30 p.m. games, the Stars Orange smoked Georgia FC Blackburn 8-0, while the Tornado’s fell 4-1 to the Ambush White. At the Bethesda Park Upper 3, the Ambush 96 White pounded an under-manned FC Man U squad, while next door at Upper 4, FC Chelsea preserved its unblemished record at the hands of ECYMCA, 3-2. At 8:30 Sunday morning, Ambush White will square off against Chelsea in a match that will send the victor into the finals representing Flight B. A few matches will need to be played before Flight A is determined. [Click here for official results and Sunday’s schedule]

Under 11 Girls
A lot of goals scored were scored, and an equal number of hearts were broken, in Flights A and B of the U11 Girls Division this Saturday. The Norcross Select Girls U-11 White suffered a disappointing loss in their opening game against ASA Xtreme 97 Elite, dropping the match 10-0, while an impressive Norcross Soccer Academy earned a 2-0 victory against a gritty GFC Elite squad. NSA 97 Norcross Fury Gold handled their business against a strong GSA White team that played well in a 2-1 loss. GSA White rebounded in their second day of the game, with an eye-popping 10-0 defeat of Norcross Select. In the final game of the day, the ASA Extreme earned a sound 9-0 win over the Norcross Fury. The U12 Girls’ overall points leader is currently the ASA Extreme, but three other teams are tied with three points each, making for a slate of compelling Sunday contests. Under 10 Boys
In one of the busiest divisions of the day, the eight teams comprising the two Flights of the U10 Boys’ Division scored early, and scored often. TYSA Green won a shootout with Georgia FC Liverpool 7-4, while the GFC Arsenal weathered Tornado 98 Orange 10-2. Each of the Blue Springs Teams (Red and Blue) enjoyed early wins, with Blue taking down Georgia FC Newcastle 3-1, and Red coming up with a 5-1 victory over the Attack Soccer Club. Georgia FC Liverpool rebounded nicely from their earlier loss to pick up a 3-2 win against Blue Springs Blue, and GFC Arsenal continued their winning ways by outlasting the Attack Soccer Club 3-0. In the 5:45 p.m. matches, TYSA savored an impressive win over Newcastle 9-1, and Tornado Orange picked up their second win of the day with a 5-2 triumph over Blue Springs Red. After the dust settled at the Henderson Park pitch, TYSA Green and GFC Arsenal were leading their respective flights and appear to be on a collision course for the championship. Under 10 Girls
In the highly competitive division that is the U10 Girls, every game counts. In the division’s first games, GSA felt the effect of several miscues and missed opportunities, dropping 12-4 to Blue Springs Blue, while the Norcross Fury edged out GFC 97 6-3 in a nail biter. Henderson Park Field 5B next saw ASA Xtreme out-shoot GSA, 11-7. GFC 97 came back strong with a victory over Norcross Black 8-2, while Blue Springs Blue dropped to 1-1 in a 3-2 loss to Norcross Fury Blue. In the nightcap, ASA Xtreme edged Norcross Black, 9-0, making ASA Xtreme the early favorite to take Flight A. Both Flights could go either way, as each have two teams with three or more points. U13Girls

Under 14 Girls
Four strong…four very strong. That is the 2007 version of the Georgia FC Invitational’s U14 Girls, a division that featured some of the days’ best contests. Georgia FC 94 Power Elite started the day off strong with a 2-0 win over Thunder Athena Gold. GSA enjoyed similar results in their 2-1 win over ASA Xtreme 94 Blue. In GSA’s second game, the girls established their division dominance with a 5-1 defeat of the FC Power Elite. In contrast, ASA Xtreme rebounded from their early loss to take home a 4-0 win over Thunder Athena Gold. Just who will square off against GSA in Sunday’s finals is anyone’s guess. Under 14 Boys – Gold
Georgia FC 94 Elite sits alone atop the U14 Boys Division with an unblemished record, after taking down Alpharetta Ambush 94 White 1-0 in a heartbreaker, and outlasting Georgia FC 94 Premier 4-1 in a more comfortable victory. However, the Ambush look to build on the momentum they found in a 3-1 win over the Lanier Sharks Gold, and the Sharks themselves will be playing with an eye towards the championship game after a 2-0 victory of their own over the FC Premier. The FC Premier will be playing the role of the spoiler when it takes on the Sharks tomorrow afternoon at the Bethesda Park Butera field, while the FC Elite hope to slow the Ambush tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock and cruise into the finals. Under 14 Boys – Silver
Cobb YMCA Strikers Brazil has already ensured itself a spot in the finals of the Boys’ U14 Silver Division after it’s 2-1 take down of AFUSA 94 Silver and its 4-2 victory over Georgia FC Classic. However, there is a lot of soccer left to be played for the remainder of the division. FC Classic beat the Tull YMCA Tordano’s in a squeaker to earn three points and second place in the point standings. A tough AFUSA team lost the aforementioned 2-1 heartbreaker to Cobb YMCA, and then pounded its way to a 1:1 stalement with Tull YMCA. All teams square off tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., with AFUSA meeting FC Classic, and Tull meeting Cobb in the battle of the YMCA’s. The championship game is slotted at 5:00 p.m. [Click here for official results and Sunday’s schedule]
