Florida Football: Week 9 Preview
October 26th, 2007 Posted in Florida Sports, Florida, High School Sports, Florida Football, football, High School FootballTruth be told, blog contributor Grant Stephens has already outlined what’s on tap in the Tampa area. So check that out, too.
There were several Thursday games. Once again, the vast majority of those were in South Florida.
Sunset defeated Braddock 41-28. Cooper City defeated Western 45-30. Homestead defeated Southridge 20-9. Miami Springs defeated South Miami 28-21. American defeated Hialeah 24-0, Miami Lakes defeated Goleman 40-21, Coconut Creek defeated Northeast 22-18, Everglades defeated Piper 34-33, Cypress Bay defeated Flanagan 34-14 and Plantation defeated Broward 28-14.
Tonight’s biggest matchup is, without a doubt, the battle in South Florida between Miami Northwestern and Miami Central. Both teams are 7-0, and this one decides the district championship. Central has pulled out two games in the waning seconds. Meanwhile, Northwestern has hardly been challenged since opening the season against Texas’ Soutlake Carroll in a nationally-televised game featuring what most folks think are the country’s two best high school teams.
Another big game in South Florida featured North Miami Beach (7-0) against Dr. Krop (6-1). The playoffs are on the line for Dr. Krop in District 6A-12.
We’ll also learn more about Booker T. Washington, which puts its undefeated regular season on the line against Hallandale (6-1) in this key District 4A-16 matchup. Booker T. (6-0) should be victorious against the upstart, and it helps that junior Torrance Moise has handled the starting quarterback job well since getting the call when Sancho McDonald went down earlier this season with an ankle injury. According to the Miami Herald, Moise has thrown for 664 yards and nine touchdowns since taking over.
Now let’s jump back to the top of the state and work our way down. In the Big Bend, Tallahassee Lincoln hosts Chiles tonight. Folks, this is your District 4A-3 championship game. It should be a good battle.
Unbeaten Florida High hooks up with Navarre (5-1) in another interesting game. Plus, there’s Godby vs. Madison County, and Wakulla vs. East Gadsden. All games worth much more than the admission to football fans.
In other parts, Bartram Trail travels to Nease for yet another tough one. Deltona’s playoff hopes are on the line against Spruce Creek, which hosts. Lighthouse Christian hosts Warner Christian to decide the runner-up in their 1B district, where Trinity Christian continues to dominate. Pine Ridge hosts Lake Howell in another game with playoff implications. Lakeland hosts Ridge Community, and East Ridge travels to Apopka. Also, Ocala Trinity Catholic battles Newberry.
There are several big games in the Space Coast area, where Astronaut is at Cocoa Beach, Bayside hosts Eau Gallie and Merrit Island hooks up with Rockledge.
With volleyball, golf and swimming winding down, it’s a busy time. As such, consider this your abbreviated preview to be followed on Sunday by an all-day, in-depth look at everything and everyone in Florida high school football. We’ll have stats for you, we’ll have the scoop on which teams are in and out of the playoffs and who remains on the bubble. See you then, and throw on a sweater tonight. There’s a chill in the air.
