Florida Football: Week 5 Thursday Results
September 28th, 2007 Posted in Florida Sports, Florida, High School Sports, Florida Football, football, High School FootballWell, I’ve already mentioned it on another post, but I’ll do so here as well. I watched Daytona Beach Seabreeze pound Deland 56-6 on Thursday. It was the Troy Dannehower show, as the quarterback threw for 208 yards and rushed for 80 more before being replaced in the second quarter. Dannehower was in on five touchdowns, including three through the air. What’s more is that Seabreeze did it with several key starters benched for the first half. Apparently, it was Coach Marc Beach’s decision.
But lets discuss Dannehower. The kid says he wants an offer from the University of South Florida. Of course, if the Bulls beat West Virginia this weekend, so will about 400 other high school quarterbacks. What’s interesting about Dannehower is his strength. This kid is stronger than most of the defenders he faces, and that means he’s capable of ramming directly into them. That’s what he did on a 28-yard touchdown run up the middle Thursday night.
Alright, now let’s move on. We won’t pretend that our little game was of much importance. Its outcome was determined weeks ago, when both teams showed what they bring to the table.
No, the big game on Thursday was down in Palm Beach Gardens, where Glades Central eked out a 14-7 win. There’s all sorts coverage of this one, from this story from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel to this story from the Palm Beach Post. The game was knotted 7-7 until Glades Central scored midway through the final quarter. Sophomore Antwon Chilsom scored the winning touchdown on a 13-yard run to keep Glades Central (5-0) on the path to a state championship. Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer falls to 2-2 with the loss.
The area also brought two upsets. First, Royal Palm Beach defeated West Boca Raton 22-14 behind three touchdown passes from Marvin Payne to Chris Dunkley. Also, Palm Beach Lakes defeated Lake Worth 34-30.
Also in the Palm Beach area, Cardinal Newman pounded Forest Hill 36-0.
The Miami Herald has the goods on some of South Florida’s Thursday games, and there were several. Miami Central improved to 4-0 with a 42-27 drubbing of Miami Norland. In that one, Jeffrey Godfrey showed why he’s so highly touted, throwing five touchdown passes. According to the story, he completed 14-of-25 passes for 229 yards.
Coral Gables also improved to 4-0, as did Miami Braddock. For the latter of the two, it was the first time in the school’s history that it won its first four games. South Miami defeated Palmetto 21-14 in other action.
The Sun-Sentinel also has this story on Miami Douglas’ win against Plantation.
