Eloy Vargas Picks Gatorland

I’m in the press box in Daytona Beach tonight. There are a lot of Gators fans here, and several of them just shouted hooray at the news that came in this afternoon from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Delray Beach American Heritage power forward Eloy Vargas has committed to the Florida Gators, according the newspaper. I met Vargas in July at the AAU basketball national championship in Orlando.

Vargas, 6-10, will play this year with Kenny Boynton, the junior sensation who transferred over the summer to the private school after playing at Blanche Ely in 2006. Vargas gives Florida its typical multi-faceted big man. He can hit the jumper from deep and bang opponents in the paint.

The question now is what this means for Boynton. The two won the AAU national championship together for Florida Elite. They’ll likely share a state championship in the spring as well. But will they play together for the Gators?
