A River Ridge player runs for a big gain Friday in a home game against Tarpon Springs. It was one of few first downs for River Ridge (1-3). Tarpon Springs dominated for a 37-0 win to improve to 3-0.

A hard rain fell, but most top teams didn’t in Week 4

It was a fairly tame Friday night with several Thursday games already played, a host of teams taking the week off and weather postponing other games. Many of the top schools that did play were highly favored against teams from their own district. But there’s still plenty to discuss. Here’s a class-by-class breakdown of what happened followed by the result of each game featuring one of our 160 top 20 teams. Also, you’ll notice that we’ve linked the results to newspaper game stories from across the state. If a game didn’t feature a team in the top 20, you’ll want to check out a separate post with scores from other games.

In 1A, where the top two teams were idle this week, perhaps the most significant game was Fort Meade’s 14-12 road victory at (St. Petersburg) Northside Christian. It was the first loss of the season for Northside Christian. The matchup featured two teams ranked in our 1A top 5 at the start of Week 4. Also significant was Holy Trinity’s 46-30 loss to Orlando First Academy, which has won three straight since starting the season with a loss.

In 1B, Deltona Trinity Christian had a bit tougher time in a 28-15 victory against Celebration, a much larger school. No. 6 Merritt Island Christian fell 27-21, suffering the team’s first loss against district rival Oviedo Master’s Academy. FAMU bounced back this week to defeat Cottondale 20-0. Meanwhile, Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic, Monticello Aucilla Christian Academy and DeLand Lighthouse Christian joined Trinity at 4-0.

In 2A, our No. 6, St. Andrew’s lost a 12-7 game against Palm Beach Cardinal Newman, and Chaminade-Madonna, our No. 8, lost 36-22 to Coral Springs Charter. That leaves plenty of room for our favorite school, Fernandina Beach, which is going to move into the top 10 come Tuesday after improving to 4-0 following last year’s winless season. We should point out that they’re not the only team to do this sort of thing. Cape Coral Baker didn’t win a game in the past two seasons before starting this year 3-0. Daytona Beach Father Lopez is also winning this year after failing to notch a single win in 2006. Plus, there’s Mount Dora, which is now 3-0 in 2A after defeating Umatilla 28-20 on Friday. Mount Dora also went winless for 2006.

In 2B, Pahokee maintained its stranglehold on the top spot with a 24-0 dismantling of Jupiter. Also improving to 4-0 were Newberry, Chipley and The Villages. Most of our top 20 won, but Blountstown lost 7-0 to No. 2 Florida High. Now Blountstown is just 2-2, but they’re the best 2-2 team in the class.

In 3A, we have the week’s biggest upset. Avon Park, a team that was outscored 89-9 in its first two games, upended Wauchula Hardee 10-7. That would be the same Hardee team that upset North Fort Myers 20-7 on Aug. 31 and followed it with a 22-13 win against Fort Meade. Baker County could be the biggest mover after defeating Jacksonville Raines 28-21 to improve to 4-0. It was the first loss for Raines. Cardinal Gibbons also lost, falling 15-14 to the bigger school in Coconut Creek. St. Augustine, Naples and Wakulla each recorded a shutout, as did North Marion and Astronaut.

In 4A, Tallahassee Lincoln finally lost, but this one really doesn’t even count. Valdosta High defeated Lincoln 21-17 up in Georgia. It’s tough to judge how that one affects Lincoln. Valdosta, after all, is a perennial powerhouse, too. Lots of the top 4A teams probably would have lost that one, but only Lincoln had the gall to play the game. They have to get some credit for that. Booker T. and Armwood rolled to blowout wins, so either could claim the top spot. Daytona Beach Seabreeze, meanwhile, defeated Merritt Island 38-14, a convincing margin against a good team. The Bocas, of course, brought one of the week’s best games, which West Boca winning 14-13 against Boca Raton. They just might trade spots in 4A.

In 5A, Lakeland just refuses to relinquish the top spot. They defeated Boyd Anderson 30-6 on Thursday. Mainland pounced on Deltona Pine Ridge 49-0. The Bucs are shaping up to be a title contender, as is Kissimmee Osceola, which is now 4-0 after winning 42-24 against Sarasota this week. Perhaps somewhat overlooked is Jacksonville Bartram Trail’s 26-14 victory against Orange Park in a game that was anything but easy. Coconut Creek’s 15-14 win against Cardinal Gibbons is going to help their cause significantly in Tuesday’s new rankings.

In 6A, Miami Northwestern had the week off. Our No. 2, Apopka, defeated Ocoee 36-0, and Miami Central kept pace with a 39-0 win against Miami Goleman. The biggest loss was Cypress Bay’s 35-12 stumble against Parkway Academy. Perhaps one of the bigger victories was Lake Brantley’s 16-0 shutout of a good Winter Springs squad.
