Florida Football: Week 4 Rankings

September 18th, 2007 Posted in Florida Sports, Florida, High School Sports, Florida Football, football, High School Football

With another week in the books, there is still a little shifting among the teams in our rankings.

In 1A, the most notable change is the rise of (St. Petersburg) Northside Christian to the No. 5 spot. A 4-0 start to the season just can’t be denied. Also rising is (Jacksonville) Providence, which breaks into the top 10 along with Branford.

In 1B, FAMU falls out of the top 10 after losing a second game. They could be back, but they’ll need to prove themselves. Merrit Island Christian is the biggest mover. They’re our No. 6 after not being ranked last week. Merritt Island Christian has just two wins, both of them in close ballgames, but both opponents are shaping up to be among the best of 1B. One of those opponents, (Sarasota) Out-of-Door Academy, rises to No. 8 this week, pulling ahead of (South Daytona) Warner Christian, which lost to Merritt Island Christian last Friday. Santa Fe Catholic also breaks into the top 10.

In 2A, Madison County’s upset win against 4A’s (Ponte Vedra Beach) Nease pushes them to the top, just ahead of Walton. (Plantation) American Heritage climbs to No. 5, where they join six other unbeaten teams in this week’s top 10. Fernandina Beach is knocking on the door at No. 11, and Mount Dora is looming down at No. 18 after they, too, had a winless 2006 season. Actually, Mount Dora was coming off a 24-game losing streak before the began this season 2-0.

In 2B, there wasn’t much change at the top, as Pahokee continues to hold off (Tallahassee) Florida High for the top spot. Newberry and Chipley break into the top 10 based upon their 3-0 records, and the Villages is at No. 10 after they also started 3-0. Of course, that leaves a few undefeated teams out of the top 10. We fully expect that to take care of itself over the next few weeks.

In 3A, there are several teams worthy of top billing. Naples holds it again this week after shutting out their opponent, but it could change at any moment. Baker County is finally given some respect after starting 3-0. They appear at No. 12, just ahead of a LaBelle team that lost its first game this week. Monsignor Pace is back on the charts despite starting 1-2, and Williston finds itself among the top 20 at No. 19.

In 4A, (Tallahassee) Lincoln claims the No. 1 spot, jumping ahead of (Seffner) Armwood. The old No. 1, (Ponte Vedra Beach) Nease falls to No. 6 after it lost last Friday. That moves Booker T. Washington and a few other teams up a spot. Pace is in the top 10 this week after starting 3-0, and Winter Haven comes in at No. 10 despite losing to Lakeland in a close one. Wolfson also finds itself ranked for the first time, but it’s a ranking that kept Milton and Navarre, both 3-0, off the list for at least another week.

In 5A, Lakeland holds No. 1 again despite another unconvincing win, this time against Winter Haven. The Dreadnaughts are an interesting bunch. They go from a powerhouse to one of those teams that improves with each game. Lakeland this year could be a much better story than Lakeland of last year, and that’s because it’s a bit of a growth experience for the team. Of course, there are some other teams that gladly would take the burden of being ranked No. 1. Perhaps most interesting is that three teams from 5A-8 are among the top six in the class, meaning that one of the state’s best 5As doesn’t get a playoff berth.

In 6A, we’re almost completely clueless. Sure, there’s almost no doubt that Miami Northwestern will win a state title, but what happens after that? In District 1, Deltona is 3-0 for the first time in the school’s history, but 1-2 (Bunnell) Flagler Palm Coast is still thought to be the better team. District 2 has a pair of undefeated teams that might not be as good as 2-1 Lake Brantley. Then, there is Dr. Phillips, an 0-3 team that has lost its three games to highly regarded opponents by a combined 15 points. Apopka gets our No. 2 spot this week after defeating Dr. Phillips 24-20. Meanwhile, making big jumps are 3-0 Vero Beach and 2-1 Lake Worth, which knocked off West Boca last Friday. (Miami) Dr. Krop and (Miami) Christopher Columbus also earned a spot in the top 20 after each won last week to start the year 3-0. And, hey, just to make it interesting, (Hialeah) American is 3-0, which actually has them just ahead of Northwestern in District 13. Of course, that isn’t going to last long.
