Florida Kicks Off High School Volleyball Season

With students in classes, volleyball programs across the state are prepping for their seasons with a host of preseason tournaments that kick off the high school volleyball season this week. Lots of action starts today, but some tournaments are slated for Friday and Saturday.

Stay tuned all season for our Player of the Week features, where we’ll be showcasing one of the state’s top female athletes. There’s sure to be a few volleyball players in the mix, too. If you’d like to nominate somebody, just drop us a line with a little information about the player’s performance.

Among the state’s top players for 2007 are Brett Benzio, a senior middle hitter from Jensen Beach, Navarre senior setter Sarah Augustin, Alachua Santa Fe senior middle blocker Leah Leventhal, Naples senior middle hitter Cassie Mang, Jacksonville Bishop Kenny senior setter Ali Sinden, Englewood Lemon Bay senior middle hitter Becca Toor, Belleville junior outside hitter Jenna Bachmayer, Groveland South Lake senior middle blocker Monica Carney, Ponte Vedra Beach Nease senior middle block Paige DePriest, Arcadia DeSoto County junior middle hitter Brittany Muse, Ponte Vedra Beach Nease senior libero Cierra Pillsbury, Jensen Beach senior libero Jessie Kubiak, Jacksonville Stanton sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Renaker, Alachua Santa Fe junior outside hitter Ashley Rosenboom and Alachua Santa Fe junior setter Sydney Wilkerson.

All of the above players were named to the Florida Sports Writers Association’s 2006 Class 4A All-State team. Expected to return for the FSWA’s 2006 Class 3A All-State team are Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest senior Tina Arthur, Fort Myers Bishop Verot senior outside hitter Eva Dupay, Orlando Lake Highland Prep junior outside hitter Megan Gaughn, Tampa Berkeley Prep junior libero Christiana Theofilos, Tampa Academy of the Holy Names senior middle hitter Maureen Colligan, For Lauderdale Pine Crest senior middle blocker Elizabeth Ross, Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest junior outside hitter Shelby Spicer, Tampa Berkeley Prep sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Young, Tallahassee Florida High senior setter LaToya Clark, Tallahassee Florida High sennior outside hitter Melissa Robinson, Keystone Heights junior setter Kim Russell and Gainesville P.K. Yonge sophomore setter Courtney Treweek.

From Class 2A, returning All-Staters include Fort Myers Evangelical Christian junior Brittany Bunch, West Palm Beach King’s Academy senior outside hitter Rachel Goossens, West Palm Beach King’s Academy senior setter Kaitlyn Lawrence, Fort Myers Evangelical Christian senior setter Sheryl Davis, West Palm Beach King’s Academy senior middle blocker Emily Kirk, Gainesville Oak Hall senior outside hitter Katie Robinson, Baker senior outside hitter Chelsea Combest, Largo Indian Rocks Christian junior Kenzie Reynolds, Tallahassee North Florida Christian senior Michelle Jenije, Gainesville Oak Hall junior outside hitter Heather Kraft, Baker junior outside hitter Preslee Maki, Tallahassee North Florida Christian senior setter Melody Tenney and Fort Myers Evangelical Christian senior outside hitter Holly Youngquist.
