Kenny Boynton Picks Heritage Academy

August 16th, 2007 Posted in AAU Basketball

The wait was supposed to be over two weeks ago, when Kenny Boynton said it would be only a few days before he announced where he’d be going to school. It wasn’t until Wednesday, though, that the rising junior, who led Pompano Beach Branche Ely to the 6A state basketball championship last spring, announced that he’d attend Plantation’s Heritage Academy this fall.

With less than a week before the start of classes, Boynton announced that he would be playing at Heritage Academy alongside Ray Taylor and Eloy Vargas, two of his teammates from Team Breakdown, the AAU squad that won the 2007 AAU 17U national basketball championship in Lake Buena Vista.

Boynton had been rumored as far back as February to be considering Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. The shooting guard is already on the radar of the country’s top colleges, and the Oak Hill speculation ramped up when rumors began to swirl that Duke University is courting the 6-2 shooting guard’s services. which is a short drive from Duke University, rumored to be interested in the 6-1 Boynton.

Of late, there has been talk that academic concerns played a role in his decision-making. Boynton said after the AAU national championship win that his parents were actually making the decision. According to an article published Wednesday in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, American Heritage Athletic Director Byron Walker has said that Boynton, who averaged 29.1 points per game last year at Blanche Ely, has a grade point average higher than 3.0.

American Heritage Academy is now the hands-down favorite to win the Class 3A state championship. The 45-year-old private school, which charges approximately $22,000 a year for high school students, failed to make even the regional quarterfinals last season.
