Ballgame. The Breakdown win 85-47.
Boynton just hit a trey. He now has 22 points. There’s still 2:00 left, and the Breakdown lead 80-44. Keith Clanton came up limping after a score. He appears to have twisted his ankle.
Bo Reliford just got a slam. Then Boynton got a steal and went end-to-end for a layup to make it 71-41. Folks, it’s beginning to look like the end of the road for the Philly Patriots. To make matters worse, Reliford leveled one of the Patriots’ guards, who went down so hard that his coach ran across the floor to check on him. The padding at the base of the hoop apparently cushioned his fall. His coach, Joseph Memanus, though, shouted at the ref. “He went straight for his head. I didn’t see him go for the ball. If he gets hurt, it’s on you.”
It’s no contest at the moment. Kenny Boynton, a 6-1 rising junior guard from Ely, has 13 points, and Brandon Knight has 11. The Breakdown lead 59-32 with only eight minutes remaining.
The Breakdown extended their lead. They’re now in front 34-21 at the half. Their offense’s scoring is spread evenly.
With 4:47 to play in the second period, Philly has called a timeout. They trail the Breakdown 21-16.
Philly features Chris Cowell, a 6-5 interior player. Cowell, a rising senior at Malvern Prep, is running a lot of high post stuff, and he just rolled to the rim for his fourth layup to tie the game at 13s.
Team Breakdown’s intense defense is led by point guard Ray Taylor. While he stands on 5-6, Taylor, a rising junior at Miami Pace, is a hummingbird with feet.
Team Breakdown and the Philly Patriots have taken the floor for their pre-game shoot-around at The Milkhouse in Lake Buena Vista. The Breakdown feature Brandon Knight, a rising sophomore at Pine Crest High. The winner of the fourth round game advances to Tuesday’s 9 a.m. quarterfinal of the AAU 17U Boys Basketball National Tournament.
